What The Gurus Taught Me

Posted on January 31, 2009 08:00 AM by Joel Comm

There are all sorts of reason I love my work.

I get to be my own boss. I work with some fantastic people. I get nice checks from Google and others every month.

All of those things are fantastic.

But I think that what I'm most grateful for is the all the people I've met since I started building an online business.

People like Rich Schefren, Armand Morin, Mike Filsaime and a whole host of other people that I'm lucky enough to see at conferences around the country - and around the world too.

These are people who created the systems that Internet marketers use every day.

The people who invented autoresponders, opt-in mailing lists, affiliate marketing and mastery of pay-per-click advertising.

Every time I speak to these marketing gurus - whether it's at a conference, a seminar or just on the phone - I buzz with ideas for days afterwards.

So you can imagine what I was like when I was working on my new book Click Here to Order. I interviewed all of the main Internet marketing pioneers and recorded their stories.

And I learned tons.

That wasn't the idea of the book. I just wanted to tell the story of Internet marketing. But you can't talk to people like this and not learn something.

Of all of the lessons I learned though, two things stood out.

The first was that anyone can do it.

Internet pioneers are a real mixed bunch. Some of them were salesmen, a few were geeks, one even flew cargo planes for the Air Force. And the ideas and strategies that they created are now being used by everyone from college students to stay-at-home moms to giant Internet businesses.

As long as you have information that other people will want to know you can use their systems to make money.

It really is that simple - and that's what's so fantastic about Internet marketing.

The other thing that stood out though was the passion and persistence of everyone I spoke to.

All of these gurus are successful now. None of them achieved success immediately. They tested different things, learnt from their mistakes then tried again. Eventually they got it right but nothing happened overnight.

Now, no two Internet businesses are ever the same. But all of them are built with passion and persistence. If you have those two, you can also be as successful as these Internet marketers too.

Click to Order seems to be another good book, Joel. I am getting tempted to get one.

It seems to be one of a kind. Keep coming!

Joel, thanks for emphasizing persistence. I wish I had a nickel for every newbie Internet marketer who starts marketing online on Monday and quits by Friday because they're not making any money.

Half the fun of Internet marketing is being surprised by what works--and what doesn't.

P.S. I was delighted to share the "Ask the Experts" column with you and Scott Fox in the January/February issue of SUCCESS magazine.

Ok, that felt a little 'deceiving' at the end with the last line of the entry leading to ordering Click Here to Order. But I understand. Your post was a reminder that no matter how successful or expert we may be in our field, there will still be people better than us from whom we can learn from and continually improve.
