About eight years ago, a friend turned me on to the music of The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Their work can be described as bombastic and theatrical rock and roll with a distinctly classical feel created for the Christmas season.
They now have 4 CDs available, with three of them sharing a Christmas message. The other is a dark rock-opera called Beethoven's Last Night.
For the fourth year in a row, I went to see The Trans-Siberian Orchestra play live. It is becoming a holiday tradition.
But this year, I took the whole family!
M and I planned it a couple months ago and we totally surprised the kids. The couldn't figure out why we were driving 200 miles to stay somewhere for just one night. But they had a wonderful time.
As usual, the band was spectacular. The lights, lasers and pyrotechnics remind me of my younger days. And the huge smile on my daughter's face made it completely worthwhile.

Ahhh Joel, I am envious of your TSO experience. I have tried for the past two years to get to their concert in either Toronto, Canada or Buffalo, NY. Unfortunately for us the concerts have been midweek events and I work a 4-4 afternoon shift. My employer is not open to granting me time off and allowing the shift to run without a supervisor. But ...the 3 cd package from the TSO website looks appealing! For now I'll have to live the experience vicariously through your blog.
