I wish I could tell you that becoming a successful AdSense publisher is easy. I wish I could tell you that all you need to do is sign up to AdSense and hey presto... at the end of the week, you'll be lighting your barbeque with hundred dollar bills and using fine china dishes as Frisbees.
But it doesn't work that way.
Optimizing your AdSense units is hard work. And it's work that never ends.
From time to time, I still try changing things on my sites to see what a little reconfiguration will do. I do it whenever I'm testing a new advertising system. And I do it whenever I make a major change to my design.
And whenever I make a change to one of my sites, I record it in my AdSense Journal.
Nothing is more valuable than your AdSense Journal.
That journal should contain details of all the changes you've made to the way you present your ads. By looking at your AdSense Journal, you should be able to tell how much using a smaller ad unit would cost you. You should be able to see what happens when you write content that targets a different keyword. You should be able to understand which parts of your page generate the most clicks and for which units.
You should have all the information you need so that if you do consider making a change, you'll know exactly how that change is likely to affect your revenue. It's like having a complete financial blueprint for your websites.
If you haven't been keeping your AdSense Journal, you've probably been losing money.
If you have a PC, you can download a copy of AdSense Buddy. It has a built-in journaling feature that you may find helpful.
