The Alexa Toolbar - FREE Download!

Posted on February 19, 2004 01:34 PM by Joel Comm

Several years ago, I came across an incredibly useful site which has continued to stay on my hitlist. Alexa.com has since been purchased by Amazon.com and they offer a free toolbar which I find indispenable.

Not only does Alexa give you more information about who owns a site, but it also provides a popularity ranking, links to similar sites AND a FREE popup blocker (which is highly customizable). Naturally, it wouldn't be an Amazon.com product without providing a direct link to shop.

Alexa is recommended as the most useful toolbar you can add to your Internet Explorer. It's free and takes about 30 seconds to painlessly install. Go grab it!

Please let it be known what computers/browsers a piece of software you recommend works with. Alexa only runs in Windoze using IE. I don't use either.

  2. Joel Comm Says:

Yes, you are correct. Alexa only runs on PCs running Internet Explorer, which accounts for over 93% of web surfers.

Yeah Joel! I'm gonna repot you to some government organization that makes sure people list the appropriate information in their web logs!!

  4. Joel Comm Says:

No need. Don't you know the government sees EVERY web page and email in the world? Big Brother is watching YOU! EEEEEEEK!

It's also spyware that logs browser activity. You may implicitly trust Amazon and their ability to protect your personal data, but I don't think a toolbar is sufficient incentive for giving up my privacy to anyone.

  6. Pete Says:

Is it possible that Alexa install itself into my PC? I've did a clean installation of WinXP on my machine, and in less than 12 hours, Alexa toolbar appears in my IE6, it just came out of no where! All I did was installing SP1 and some updates thru Windows Update, could this be related to my problem?

  7. Joel Comm Says:

I have never heard of Alexa installing itself. It's an Amazon product and requires you to say "yes" to the install.

But, it is suspicious that it is on your PC just the same.
