Success On Twitter Is All About You

Posted on November 16, 2009 08:00 AM

We knew it would happen. It always happens. Not long after Twitter's popularity hit the stratosphere, the spammers began swarming. Now direct messages boxes are packed with Mafia invitations, follower lists have been infiltrated by pornbots, and I had to put up with dozens of impostors trading on my name before my verified account was able to show who's really me. Whenever something gets big and successful on the Internet, you can bet that there... Continue Reading

Fourteen Types of Tweets

Posted on June 25, 2009 06:13 PM

Apart from Twitter's own terms of service which prohibit obvious things like harassment, transmitting viruses and spamming other members, there really aren't many rules to the site. You can essentially use Twitter however you like. However, for people and businesses who want to use Twitter successfully (eg: build a following and grow their circle of influence), there are a number of best practices that can be observed. I cover many of these in my book... Continue Reading

What Makes a Business Grow

Posted on May 27, 2009 08:00 AM

The people behind Twitter were incredibly lucky. They weren't lucky because they had a great idea. They weren't even lucky that no one else had thought of their idea before them. They were lucky that the system took just two weeks to build. My staff and I get together for regular brainstorming sessions. We toss out ideas left, right and center. By the time we walk out of that room, we've got a white board... Continue Reading

Do You Have What It Takes To Be A Success?

Posted on April 4, 2009 08:00 AM

There are times when I've sat in a conference, looked around a room full of bright, hopeful entrepreneurs and wondered how many of them will become successful. I don't mean how many of them will be successful this time next year or how many will be millionaires in five years' time. I mean how many will be successful at all. Continue Reading

Twitter Power on The Denver Morning Show

Posted on March 3, 2009 07:53 AM

I had the opportunity to be a guest on the Denver Morning Show today. The show broadcasts on Channel 2 out of Englewood, CO and is anchored by Tom Green. (Not THAT Tom Green.. the other one...) The interview was to focus on my new book, Twitter Power, and I certainly had a skeptic in Mr. Green! The set was typical as you would expect of a local news program. It's always fun to watch... Twitter Goes Down for 24 Hours

Posted on February 13, 2009 10:59 AM

I use Twitter very naturally. I rarely schedule a tweet. If I have something to say, I say it. If I feel the notion to reply to an @joelcomm tweet, I reply. If I want to take photos while on the move, I'll use Tweetie and Twitpic. And if I want to talk business, I talk business. I am not on Twitter all the time, but I also do check in at least once/day to... Continue Reading

Time to Fail

Posted on January 29, 2009 08:00 AM

Here's a confession... Not every idea I've had has been golden. In fact, I can say that many of the business ideas I've tried have managed to bring me... well, let's just say something was funding one or two lunches per week. That's one of the advantages of marketing. Everyone gets to know about your successes but your failures just fade away. Continue Reading

Can You Turn Pictures Into AdSense Profits?

Posted on December 26, 2008 08:00 AM

AdSense has a weakness. It's not very good at handling images. Fill your blog or your website with pictures of your cat, your family or your vacation in Yosemite and you might please your readers, but Google won't know what to make of it. Unless you have a sizeable amount of text on your Web page, its robots won't be able to decide what you're talking about. You'll get Public Service Ads that don't earn... Continue Reading

Posted on December 21, 2008 10:18 AM

A few days ago I became the first app store developer to reveal sales-to-rank data. Some other sites have confirmed an interest in this data, such as The UnOfficial Apple Weblog. With iFart continuing its move up the charts, I want to continue sharing data with you, especially since something very interesting has happened since we broke into the top ten apps in the world. Earn more Passive Income with AdSense for Domains

Posted on December 13, 2008 12:33 AM

A collective groan was heard from domain parking services as Google stepped up to take ground and plant an AdSense flag. AdSense for Domains allows you to point your parked domains to a Google server where they will be all-too-happy to manage them for you. There's really nothing to it. Simply tell Google which domains you want to park with them. Continue Reading

Amazon on iPhone

Posted on December 3, 2008 09:14 AM

I've been a huge fan of Amazon.com since Bezos launched the site out of his garage. When the pundits said "It'll never work", I said they were clueless. Of course it will work. I spend more money on Amazon then any other online store, as do many of you. I'm also a huge fan of my iPhone and I've used it to shop at Amazon many times. Book Signing at Barnes and Noble

Posted on November 26, 2008 08:18 AM

I recently had the opportunity to do a book signing at our local Barnes & Noble store in Loveland, Colorado. The team at the store was very friendly and accomodating, setting up an area for me to do a couple presentations, interact with customers and sign books. They ordered plenty of copies of Click Here to Order and The AdSense Code, so there was enough for everyone. They placed a nice sign on the table... Continue Reading

Your Site Will Cost You...

Posted on November 20, 2008 08:00 AM

Online publishing is a business. Like any business it requires work. It requires paying taxes. And it requires investments of cash to keep going. That last hurdle is the one that many people stumble over. They think that because the only equipment they need to set up an online publishing business is a computer, that's the only expense they'll ever need to pay. Wrong. Continue Reading

We hopped a tour bus to the Blue Mountains on Monday. It was the Queen's Birthday, so the country was on holiday and the traffic was light. One of the challenges of building pages for AdSense is that until the page is up and running, you can't really tell which ads you're going to get. And that's vital information. I love my Tivo. I have owned one for over five years and I have charmed many friends with live demonstrations of what Tivo can do. Unfortunately, Tivo has not been able to accelerate their subscriber base enough to become profitable. The word on the street is that Apple is interested in Tivo. Of course, the companies aren't responding to the "rumours". But I think it would be a perfect match. Tivo is the Macintosh... Continue Reading

More about Tsunami

Posted on December 28, 2004 12:10 PM

The body count continues to climb in what is undoubtedly the greatest tragedy of human loss in my lifetime. As of this writing, it is estimated that upwards of 44000 people have been killed by the massive earthquake and tidal waves in Indonesia. The concept of waves moving at nearly 500 mph is staggering. This graphic demonstrates how this takes place. The whole thing seems so distant, yet is brought home by the heartbreaking photos... Continue Reading

Tsunami

The biggest earthquake to hit planet earth in 40 years hit Southeast Asia with a vengeance today, triggering tidal waves and tsunamis that have killed thousands of people. JAKARTA, Indonesia - The world's most powerful earthquake in 40 years triggered massive tidal waves that slammed into villages and seaside resorts across southern and southeast Asia on Sunday, killing more than 7,200 people in six countries. Tourists, fishermen, homes and cars were swept away by walls... Continue Reading

Ask Dave Taylor

Posted on November 24, 2004 01:19 AM

Admit it. Burning deep in your soul is a desire to be a computer geek. You want nothing more than the ability to write perl code in your sleep. And on a very good day, you'd leap over cascading style sheets in a single bound. Or maybe not. In fact, one thing that stands in the way of me getting anything done is all the technical nonsense I need to wade through in order to... Continue Reading

The Incredibles is, er.. are.. hmmm

Posted on November 7, 2004 11:54 AM

The Incredibles is Disney/Pixars' latest cash cow. Can these people do no wrong? Pixar has animated toys, bugs, monsters and fish. But one realm they had not covered to date was people. The wait is over. I took the kids to see The Incredibles yesterday and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. The Incredibles is a story of super heroes who have been exiled by the government and the people, due to ever-increasing litigation incurred as... Continue Reading

Fahrenhype 9/11

Posted on October 11, 2004 04:31 PM

From today's edition of FamilyFirst... Today's Family First site is one that seeks to help level the playing field in current political climate. Sort of a ying to the more liberal yang that seems to be cluttering the airwaves, print media, and bandwidth of the Internet. While some of you may scoff at the material presented on this site, call it lies, hateful deception, and other things that can't and won't be repeated here, just... Continue Reading

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

Posted on October 3, 2004 10:18 PM

Mary and I had the opportunity to enjoy a "date night" on Friday. First we enjoyed a nice dinner at Johnny Carinos Italian restaurant. Next we went to the mall and pigged out on ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery (superior to Marble Slab in case you are wondering). Finally, it was on the cinema to take in a showing of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. I received a great deal of chastisement... Continue Reading

Six: The Mark Unleashed

Posted on September 15, 2004 01:27 AM

After the somewhat scathing replies I got regarding my review of the Christian film, Gone, I am somewhat reluctant to step up to the plate again. Regardless (or irregardless if you want to annoy people), I will now attempt to convey my thoughts on a film I viewed today. Six: The Mark Unleashed is a futuristic end-times thriller focusing on the coming one-world government and the ubiquitous "mark of the beast" which must be taken... Continue Reading

Dialup Accelerator

Posted on August 23, 2004 12:51 AM

It was just like any other day. I booted up my computer and started to check on my web sites. And as happens from time to time, my sites were not coming up quickly or at all. My first thought is that a server is down. I test another server and see that it is not communicating either. Now I start thinking my T1 to the office is down. So I apply the test to... Look, up in the sky!

Posted on August 12, 2004 02:03 AM

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Nope, its the Perseids! No, I am not nuts. The Perseids is a meteor shower that has been around since the time of the Civil War. From Space.com... "The Perseids are the result of stream of debris in space laid down by comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the Sun every 130 years and spends most of its time in the far reaches of the solar system. On each... Continue Reading

Beaver Creek, CO

Posted on July 13, 2004 01:01 AM

(This entry is somewhat unique in that I am composing it entirely on my T-Mobile Sidekick. I wrote about this device a few weeks back and have been very pleased with it so far. You can search my blog to find out more.) We left Boulder at 11 am and set course for Beaver Creek, a ski resort nestled a couple hour's drive into the Rockies. Once you hit I-70 going west into the mountains... Continue Reading

Boulder - Days 2 and 3

Posted on July 12, 2004 11:01 PM

One of the reasons we wanted to get out of Oklahoma and visit Colorado was because of the intolerable heat. Ninety degree days just don't agree with us. Wouldn't you know it... Boulder is having a heatwave! According to the temperature gauge in the minivan, it got up to 98 degrees today! Needless to say, we didn't feel much like hiking of being outside. However, since it is so beautiful here, it is hard to... Continue Reading

Abortion Rights?

Posted on April 28, 2004 12:00 AM

It's gonna get heavy folks. Hang tight. On the heels of Sunday's "Pro-Choice" march in the nation's capitol, I continue to be dumbfounded by the rhetoric of these people. Underneath the surface of "women's rights" lies multitudes of women wounded by their choice to kill their own babies. Let's face it. This argument is NOT about abortion. It is about whether or not the "fetus" in the womb is a life. If it is not... Continue Reading

Spring Break

Posted on March 15, 2004 07:58 PM

Well, its Spring Break. We tossed around the idea of leaving town, but couldn't agree on where to go. Instead of hitting the road, we are redoing Zach's room. He is almost a teenager and it is time for his room to grow up with him. And so we say goodbye to the red and blue primary colors, and the cars and planes wallpaper border. His room will soon be Khaki (why can't we just... Continue Reading

I actually won something

Posted on January 16, 2004 01:13 AM

I was listening to talk radio this morning on the way to work and the host began discussing a story that I had heard about on the Glenn Beck Program the day before. Essentially, this "anchorette" got blotto and entered a wet t-shirt contest at a local bar in... Continue Reading

Tivo or not Tivo? No brainer!

Posted on January 6, 2004 12:05 AM

When I look back on the past few years of technological advancements, several computer-driven products cause me to wax eloquently. My iPaq 3835 has been a trusty PDA for almost two years. But it has lost its shine and there are newer models that have stolen my affections. My Dell laptop rocks, but in a mere few months I am certain its big brother will find me coveting at its front door. My Pioneer CD... Continue Reading

The Truth about Radical Democrats

Posted on January 4, 2004 07:57 PM

It is my belief that the large majority of voting democrats have little to no idea what the radical wing of the party really stands for. The party that for so many years has rallied their voters based on fear and lies continues to do so while the masses sleep. MoveOn.org, an organization that is unable to live up to its own name as they are still living in the crushing Presidential election of 2000... Continue Reading

#13 - The Princess Bride

Posted on December 10, 2003 12:01 AM

Hello. My name is Indigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die. By most standards, The Princess Bride should have been no more than a mere blip in the history of cinema. The fairy-tale story of the handsome hero, of the beautiful damsel held against her will by an evil prince, and of the sappy happily-ever-afters undoubtedly attached to the end has been endlessly repurposed by Hollywood again and again. However, when Rob Reiner... Continue Reading

Posted on November 2, 2003 06:34 PM

We checked out of the Red Roof Inn around 9:30 or so and drove a few miles to Paramount's King's Dominion Theme Park in Doswell, Virginia. I purchased tickets online last night to save a few bucks. We checked Socrates into the kennel at the park and went on our way. Our first stop was the Spongebob Squarepants 3-D attraction. It was a standard theater/simulator ride with 3-D effects. Day 20: Let Freedom Ring!

Posted on October 24, 2003 09:11 PM

It was another walk in the footsteps of our Founding Fathers. The city of Philadelphia is where the Declaration of Independence was composed and signed. If I had known how crowded the bus would have been, I think we would have taken a cab. Anyhow, we arrived downtown and... Continue Reading
