Google. Amazon.com. eBay. Yahoo! MySpace. Facebook. Everyone has heard of these Internet giants. These companies have generated billions of dollars in revenue and made their founders multi-millionaires. The mainstream media talks about them religiously. But ask yourself a question... The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

Posted on April 29, 2008 10:54 PM

When Mike Filsaime visited last week, he suggested that I get a the DVD documentary, "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters". It is the story of a the men who are completely dedicated to owning the world record for the highest score in the videogame, Donkey Kong. Yes, you heard me correctly. There are people who obsess about having the high score for a videogame. After all, there is an entry in the... Continue Reading

Why Doesn't Your Doctor Know This?

Posted on February 22, 2008 12:10 AM

Admit it. You are passionate. Oh, I don't know what you are passionate about. But I guarantee that you are passionate about SOMETHING! You may be crazy about parakeets. Or perhaps you know more about bonzai trees than anyone on the block. Maybe you are one of the world's leading experts on Mt. Everest. Or it could be that you make the best french silk pie in the hemisphere! The point is that everyone is... Continue Reading

Google Referrals 2.0

Posted on July 4, 2007 12:07 AM

Google's referral programs have never impressed me very much. Although the commissions are now fair, they started out very low. But even at the new(ish) rates, few sites are going to benefit from them. They're only good for publishers who aim their content at other publishers. That's always been the problem with Google's referrals: there were too few products aimed at too few topics. But Google has been working on a whole new referral system... Continue Reading

Spiderman 3

Posted on April 15, 2007 12:45 AM

The hype for Spiderman 3 is building faster than any movie I can recall since the last Star Wars film. Could this end up becoming the highest grossing film of all time, perhaps knocking Titanic off it's perch? Only time will tell as we still have a few weeks before the film launches on May 4th. At the very least, the teasers and trailers are a fascinating study in pre-launch marketing. Will you be seeing... Continue Reading

Riathamus Lives - Kudos to Blizzard and World of Warcraft

Posted on March 31, 2007 08:29 AM

Last week, I wrote how my World of Warcraft account was compromised over a wireless network while at a hotel in Washington, D.C. My entire account was emptied of my hard-earned gold and loot. I was left without anything. I wrote to the support team at Blizzard with complete details of my account and what had happened. They wrote me back telling me that my case would be escalated to the investigation team, and that... Continue Reading

Are Your Ads in Order?

Posted on March 9, 2007 07:28 AM

You already know that ad units placed above the fold tend to get the most clicks. But did you also know that Google automatically places the highest-earning ads in the first ad unit on the page? That's very helpful. Before you've done any optimization, you're already getting the most valuable ads in the best spot on your page. The problem comes when you start optimizing. Continue Reading

Google Knows What I Need

Posted on February 10, 2007 03:07 PM

Let's face it. Google's AdSense program is absolutely ingenious. It's not perfect, but it is ingenious. Occasionally, an ad will display that is not relevant to the content on the page. But more often than not, the AdSense bot knows what ads to show. This was never truer than the ad I saw displayed on my blog entry from yesterday. Continue Reading

Merry Christmas 2006

Posted on December 25, 2006 03:58 PM

Yesterday, we went to church for Christmas Eve service. And the pastor put a twist on the message that I hadn't really considered before. He asked "How many of you believe that Jesus is the reason for the season?" Hands went up throughout the sanctuary. And then the room when silent when he said, "Jesus is NOT the reason for the season!" Continue Reading

Building on the Basics

Posted on July 28, 2006 10:51 AM

When I give talks explaining how people can use AdSense to earn high revenues, I focus on some very specific strategies. I do the same in my book. I explain which ad formats work best, discuss where to put them, how to blend them into the page and how to influence the ads that appear so that you can make sure you’re always earning the highest revenues possible. Give us a REAL Conservative, Mr. President

Posted on October 30, 2005 10:51 PM

With the Harriet Miers nomination withdrawn, conservatives everywhere are calling on the President to bring forth a true conservative judge in the fashion of Scalia and Thomas. We desperately need to bring sanity back to the highest court in the land. Appointing a judge that would interpret the law, rather than legislate from the bench, is the best way to achieve this goal. Bush Nominates Harriet Miers to Supreme Court

Posted on October 4, 2005 10:54 PM

In a move that has brought criticism from both sides of the political aisle, President Bush has nominated White House lead counsel, Harriet Miers, to the highest court in the land. Though Ms. Miers has no paper trail related to judicial decisions (as she is not a judge), she does appear to be a pro-life Christian, and one with definitive views towards the Constitution. Federal Judge blows it again

Posted on September 14, 2005 06:01 PM

Here we go again. A federal judge in California (9th Circuit Court of Appeals) has ruled that the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional because it includes the words "Under God". This highlights the reason that it is critical for Bush's appointee, Judge John Roberts, to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. We need strict constitutionalists sitting on the bench, and not activists judges who rewrite the law in order to promote their own agenda. Roberts... Continue Reading

World of Warcraft Level 60 - Now What?

Posted on September 4, 2005 02:27 PM

After many months of exploring the huge world of Azeroth, Riathamus, my human warrior, has reached level 60 of World of Warcraft. I have seen every region, visited virtually every nook and cranny and encountered hundreds (thousands?) of baddies. I have upgraded my weapons, my armor and my skills close to the maximum. So now what? My interest level has declined exponentially. It's been a fantastic journey from newbie at the Northshire Cathedral. I must... Continue Reading

Ding Dong the Witch is... Retiring!

Posted on July 1, 2005 01:44 PM

The news is out. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Conner is retiring from the Supreme Court. I know she has struggled with cancer and I wish her well with her health and family life. However, I could not be more delighted that she is leaving a vacancy on the highest court in the land. In fact, I am reminded of the elated feeling that the munchkins felt when Dorothy's house landed on the Wicked Witch... Continue Reading

Stolen Honor - Must See TV

Posted on October 17, 2004 10:34 PM

Ok, so Michael Moore has had his day in the sun. Fahrenheit 911 infiltrated movie houses across America and succeeded in persuading a segment of the population with incredible distortions and outright lies. Now, the Kerry campaign and Democrats have forgotten that the First Amendment means free speech for EVERYONE. This would include Sinclair Broadcasting and their plans to air a documentary exposing John Kerry for who he really is. The documentary is called Stolen... Continue Reading
