Seussical the Musical

seusscd.gifAbout three years ago, I came upon the soundtrack for Seussical the Musical at Amazon.com. Seussical is a Broadway production based on the works of the late Dr. Seuss. The story follows many favorite Seuss characters including The Cat in the Hat (the Narrator), Horton the Elephant, Mazie McBird, Gertrude McFuzz, a cast of Who's and many more favorites, in a family-friendly joyful walk down memory lane. My family and I have worn out the CD (if you could do such a thing with a CD... ah, I miss records...) and knew the words to many of the songs.

At that time, the musical was only on Broadway and I knew we weren't going to New York just to see the show, so we would wait until a touring group headed our way. Well, they finally made it to Oklahoma City and I took the family to see Seussical the Musical last night.

seuss1.jpgOnce I hear a soundtrack recording many times, I am hopeful that the live production will live up to the recording. In the past, I have been disappointed with the translation from studio recording to the stage. In this case, the live production exceeded my expectations. An extremely talented and gifted group of musicians, singers, actors and dancers provided a much-needed respite from the dailyness of life.

I'm not going to provide an in-depth review here, but I highly recommend seeing this show if it comes to your area. Zach and Jenna both enjoyed it thoroughly, and it gave me a few moments of feeling like a kid again.

  10. Ali Says:

My school is doing Seussical the Musical, and I am soooo excited. I think that the characters are all so amazing. And what I think is great about them is that even if some of the characters aren't big, on stage, all the time parts, they are still some of the most loved and remembered characters like Sour Kangaroo, and Gen. Khan Smitz. I can't wait until auditions!

  11. Chris Freeman Says:

I live in Macon,GA. Right now, Theatre Macon is doing a production of Seussical Dec. 10-18 and it is amazing!!!! i am one of the Wickersham Brothers and it is the most fun show i have ever taken part in. I suggest that everyone should have an opportunity to do this show. IT IS SOOOOOOOOO MUCH FUN!!! "MONKEY AROUND!!!!!!!"~ Chris (wick 1)

  12. Kate Says:

Yeah! I've heard it's reallly good, actually! I'm auditioning tonight! Since we don't have a male with the range required for JoJo, he's going to either cast a middle school boy, or actually cast a female! I'm hoping I get the part... Anyway, happy blogging!

  13. Meg Says:

I have been trying to get my drama teacher to do a presentation of this play. I saw it on Broadway a few years ago and I LOVED it! It is such an original and heart warming play.

  14. scott bradford Says:

hello there. i have as of yet heard any music, or seen this show. i found out recently that my school will be doing this musical next year (2006), and the auditions are late this year. now you see, i should be able to get any part i want i believe, because my voice is a lot stronger then any other boys in my year level (which will be 11 when it is on). but i was wondering, i am a skinny, arrogant kind of actor and i'm not sure what part would i prefer. what would be more fun? the cat in the hat? horton? or jojo? thankyou,
    scott

  16. Elizabeth and Lauren Says:

Our High School is doing Seussical right now as well (January 2005, San Mateo High School...it's in California). Our drama department is known to be one of the best in the state for high schools. We are performing at the end of the month for two weekends, and its going really well. We have some extremely talented students playing the lead roles, so it should be a good show...we're entering it into a Bay Area competition. Hopefully we'll do well!

  17. Kelsie M'. Randle Says:

I'm Mayzie La Bird and I live in that tree! Our community theatre group has just gotten done performing that show(www.cmtworks.com) very good show, five stars!

  18. Kelsie M'. Randle Says:

  19. Kirsten Says:

My Jr. High school is doing Seussical in March 2005 and I'm Miss Gertrude McFuzz. I love how imaginative this play is and I can tell that we're going to have a great time doing it!

  20. Les Pock Says:

    Hi,

I happened to notice that you were planning to do Seussical, and thought you might be interested to see a couple of clips from a DFW area community theatre production.

    If so, go to
    www.jackiepock.com
and click on the Seussical graphic. The video is on the linked page.

    Good luck!

I am playing sour kangaroo in our seussicle show. Does anybody know who the female lead is?

  22. Laurel Householter Says:

This one is 4 Scott Bradford...I'd say don't even try out! Why you ask? Because you said it yourself...you are an ARROGANT actor... this is a show kids will come & watch. they don't need their hero characters played by jerks!

  23. Emily Says:

Yeah, I've been looking for pictures of the jungle characters as well because I'm pretty dissatisfied by what I have heard in my school. The costume designer said that they might be made of Pajamas... One-zs and big animal heads. If anyone finds any pics of the jungle characters please send a link to me. It would be very much appreciated.

  24. jade mccudden Says:

  30. Abs Says:

My high school is doing a production of Seussical this Spring. I love it. I get to play my favorite character, Gertrude McFuzz, and I love the part with all my heart. It is the most fun I have ever had performing in a musical thus far. Everyone needs to go and see it somewhere or take part in the making of it somehow. They won't regret it at all!

  31. Daniel Says:

My high school just finished our production of Seussical and it was a blast!I was a wickersham brother, and veryone enjoyed the show. We did 4 shows (three nights, one mantinee) and we sold out at everyone! We have pictures on our high schools website of our open dress rehersal (http://www.sjhigh.ca) that was so much fun. Everyone is really sad now because the show is done, but our director is going to do a renunion show sometime in June! It's going to be a blast!

  32. Jessica Ham Says:

I was in Seussical the musical a month ago. I'm so sad it's over. I was a who. It is the best musical ever! If Niki Fernandez a.k.a. the cat in the hat at Reedley high school is reading this, Hi
and you rock! You are also my role model! I want to be just like you.

  33. Jess Says:

Ha! Would you believe it? My school AND drama club are both doing Seussical this Sept/Oct! It's sooooooo exciting, I just found out that i got the lead Wickersham! Anyway, my auditions for my drama club are this sunday, and im hoping to get JoJo!

  34. Brian Says:

My High School is doing a production of Seussical, and I really think that our students are doing a way better job than the people in the broadway version. I mean, the people on Broadway can sing, obviously, but they didn't fit their characters. Our production is amazing. I'm on the stage crew, we are dressed as Thing 1, and Thing 2's because props need to be moved during the scene. Anyway, I was going to be Jojo, they asked me to have the part but they were short for stage crew, so I helped them. I can do another musical later.

  35. Arianna Says:

I love Suessical the Musical! i am always singing it! We just finished our shows and were sold out every night. I played Mayzie La Bird and i had a blast! It was def one of Warwicks best shows. I miss it so much!

  36. Brittany Says:

Hi our school just found out that we were doing seussical and i am kind of down because i haven't even heard of this play before and to be honest it doesn't sound all that exciting and entertaining, no offense, please someone email me and reasure me that this is an excellent play to be in. Also if anyone know's what THE female lead is that would help me so much. Thanks

  37. eric Says:

i did seussical with my high school it was a great experience as jojo and being introduced to theater

  38. Tanner Says:

i'll be playing jojo for our school's play in Nov 2005. I'm not sure whether i'll be seeing it normally or down an octave. Any advice for playing this part? thanks

  39. David Fitch Says:

I'm doing Seussicle with the U.K Theatre School in Glasgow. I'm playing General Schmitz. It's one of the most fun shows i've ever been part of, and we're only three days into rehersals!!! Can't wait for opening night.

  40. Lauren Says:

Im glad you have information on this show. When I heard the theater group was doing Seussical I looked everywhere for info and kept coming back here! There are very few sites with info on this show on the web.
I thought I blew my audition, but I got the part of Jojo, even though there were guys in the range for the character.
In the case of who is the female lead, I'd say that there really aren't leads in this play, or at least there are so many main characters it doesn't make a difference. Female characters are:
    Sour Kangaroo- mezzo
    Mayzie-Alto almost in soprano range
Gertrude- soprano (has to hit a high D off the scale)
    Mrs. Mayor-alto
I'm reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally excited to put on this play. Just be warned, this music will get stuck in your head!

  41. Lauren Says:

    for Tanner:
to play jojo, I recommend making sure that you are always very animated. jojo wears his feelings right on his sleeve and has no will-power. although the jojo in the broadway cast recording sounds very innocent, since im assuming you are older, you can add some depth and maturity to him. Just always keep in mind that he's a kid.

  42. jessica Says:

i play jojo also. my summer theatre group is putting it on and i'm very excited. thanks for the tips

  43. Jake Says:

My school Fassett Middle School is also doing Seussicle And im very excited for the auditions i hope i get Jo Jo for the last place i did was Dr.Edwina and i got Vladmir i took that to a higher level mostly because the notes originaly are much to hihgh for me :) ne suggestions about geting Jo Jo

  44. scott bradford Says:

hey, thanks for the comments. all the stuff i wrote i was just kidding about. i was just wondering what someone with an arrogant kind of character would play...because i'm really not sure of what the cat is perceived as in seussical or horton for that matter......im hoping to get a part of some sort....my voice may not be strong enough for horton or the cat....i was just wondering if it was...what the better part would be to get. good luck to the rest of you doing it and stuff. it shall be a blast

  45. Lauren Says:

i think you should play general ghengis khan shmitz....the cat can be arrogant...i guess, but i could never see Horton as being arrogant.

  46. Nadia Says:

Just wanted to say, we're doing Seussical in December, I'm playing the Cat and Sooooo excited! spread the love! x

  47. jeanne Says:

    Hi,
Our local dance studio is going to do a performance based on Dr. Suess books. I would love to find a dvd/movie of Suesical the Musical.
I have the soundtrack but would find a visual very helpful........anyone have any ideas?

  48. tina Says:

my school is going to be doing seussical this year but i do not know what part i want to try out for...i do not really want a major part but i want a part other than the chorus...what are some good characters that a high soprano should audition for??....

  49. Nadia Says:

Tina you should audition for the Sour Kangaroo. She is classed as a principal, but doesn't have as much as some of the others. Try to listen to her part before the audition if you can, it needs a heck of a voice! You could also audition for the soprano line in the bird girls, they have loads to do though, telling most of the story in three-part harmony and on stage the majority of the show. Good luck with your audition! x

  50. carley Says:

hey im from australia n it is awesome to hear how much everyone else loves seussical i played the part of mayzie earlier this year n i am still having withdrawls an awesome show!! - oh the thinks you can think!

  51. Tessa Says:

I go to a performing arts middle school and we're doing seussical also. it's a lot of fun. i'm an alto 2 but im the sour kangaroo. and my voice is practically gone. so im letting in rest for awhile. but man. belting it like aretha is great fun. anyone who considers sour kanga if they audition make sure you can belt it and lots of dedication to turn your voice into leather!!!

  52. Kirsten Says:

I LOVE the soundtrack and I'm a who (as well as understudy for BOTH the sour kangaroo and mayzie... we're small) :)My favorite song is People vs. Horton the elephant.

  53. Mike Says:

My highschool is doing Seussical in May, and tryouts are in mid-February. I REALLY want the part of JoJo but know the vocals are a little high. Does anyone know the range needed to be JoJo. Does anyone have any audition tips? Thanks a ton in advance!
    Emails work great!
    -Michael

  54. Mike Says:

Or-any other parts I should consider going out for? I'm sure an upperclassmen will get Horton and the Cat. Would the General or a Wickersham be a fun part? How big are the Wickersham roles?
    -Mike

  55. Mel Says:

  59. tess Says:

    hey people,
well my school is doing seussical next year and the auditions were held in november sometime back and (mhahaha) i got the sour kangaroo, like i knew i would. and arrogant scott got horton so suck on that Laurel Householter. anywho, i'm absoulutly loving her, she's a joy to play but lately i've been belting along with the soundtrack and it's kinda left my voice all retarded. so i can't talk/sing for a few days. mum's been making this witch brew which is absoulutly revolting, so i was just wondering if you would give me some advice on how to belt and not retard my voice. that would be greatly apreciated. and yeah seussical is the best thing since sliced bread, good on everyone who got parts and is enjoying it

And the music is incredible. Solla sollew and Alone in the universe are songs enough to make your heart melt. Egg, nest, and tree, and biggest blame fool are hard not to dance to. Its. Just. Fantastic.

  64. Sean Says:

Hey, I'm Sean. My school is doing Seussical for spring, performing it in April. I got Horton, and I'm so excited about it. One of the problems I'm having though, is that the tree with Mayzie's egg in it is about 8 feet high, and I'm terribly afraid of heights. How high was everyone else's tree when they did Seussical? Does any1 have any tips? I would really thankful. :)
    Peace.

The only real one without a singing part is Vlad Vladikoff. Well, we had Vlad as a girl because they flyed more gracefully and more like a bird. My show finished yesterday :'(

I just had auditions yesterday, and today I found out that I got the part of Mayors wife in Seussical. It's an okay part. It was double cast, and the other person is the best actress in the school. Everyone will be saying "Go see [her] night".

    :/

I'm scared. I've never been a strong singer or actress. The other Mayor's Wife is so much better than I am.

  119. Leslie : ) Says:

Hey.. i'm a junior at my high school, and we're going Seussical this April. I got the part of Sour Kangaroo. I have the big "brass and belty" voice" ... but i want to know, does the sour kangaroo have any speaking lines?

  120. Alex Says:

Im mayzie la bird and i live in that tree. enough about horton lets talk about me!

We are doing to junior version at my school. i have done many plays before but this is the best. it is SUPER fun! to the question above me, the sour kangaroo does have "lines" the show is mostly an operetta, which has very little dialoge. maybe a few lines before a few songs. the sour kangaroo has a lot of singing, and she does say a few things in some songs. at least in the junior version. Good luck! i STRONGLY reccomend this play

  121. Jennifer Says:

my school is doing Seussical for next year. im an alto. what parts could i play? i listened to some JoJo songs, but they seem just a bit high for me. any other suggestions?

oh, and can the cat in the hat be played by a girl?

  122. DENNIS RAMOS Says:

I'm interested in seeing High School performances of "Seussical" on Long Island NY after April 6, 2008. Does anyone know of any High Schools that are doing it? please let me know...

  123. Caite Says:

Hey whomever was asking about costumes like forever ago I was in this show and I was a jungle dancer/fish/hunch and when we were jungle dancers we were all girls and we wore black leotards with black tights and then we each got to choose an animal (I was a cheetah) and our costume designers made costumes based on that. For example, all animals that have fur (cheetahs, zebras etc.) wore tie- on skirts of that print with matching ears. It was very cool and fun. Also, since the change from jungle characters to fish was so fast, it provided an easy way to have a quick change so everything was based around the simple black leotard and tights and then we just added accessories. This is a very fun show and I am doing it again this coming year. I highly reccommend it to any director who has it in consideration.

  124. Caite...again Says:

Oh yeah and whoever asked about the cat in the hat being a girl... yes it can in fact, i am trying out for that part in the coming production I am doing of this show. Good luck!

  125. maia Says:

Catie, I think I was in a show with, you, because those were our costumes, too! I was a jaguar. Among others, there was a bamboo tree, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, etc.

  126. M Says:

I PLAYED JOJO AND I ROCKED

  127. camden Says:

    hi,
i was just in a prodctuion of seussical over in farmington hills. i was a bird girl. i was very lucky because they had to cut about 80 kids from the bunch :(. but we had two casts. we did a awesome job. they ahd 8 bird girls i have to say only half of the bird girls were actullay on key but some of the bird girls were handpciked because of the dancing and they hand picked me!!!!! so if you ever do this show BIRD GIRLS RULE LIKE IT OR NOT!!!!!!!!!!!

  128. Cliff Paige Says:

help-- I need a copy of the DVD or VS for Seussical---can anyone help me

  129. Terry Hopkinz Says:

I'm playing Gertrude McFuzz at my school!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited. Gertrude is such a fun character and has a lot of solo's and singing roles. She's supposed to be the sweet gentle one while Mayzie who is also a great fun part is just the opposite and thinks she's (all that!) Gertrude is secretly in love with Horton too. I think every part is really important to the show and makes it better and funner. Its just really crazy and lots of FUN!!! The characters are: The cat in the hat, Jojo, Horton, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie La Bird, Sour Kangaroo, Bird Girls, Wickersham brothers,Yurtle the Turtle, the Grinch, Jungle Creatures, Cindly Lou Who and the rest of the who's. What ever part you get will be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  130. Rei Says:

My 8 yr old is auditioning tomorrow for this musical and without knowing it he really liked Sour Kangeroo then we found out that it's a girls role. He hits all the notes right on but I am not sure if its okay to audition for it. This is his first play. He does a nice Jo Jo but he is stronger for these two songs. any thoughts?
