Multi-Level Marketing and Arbonne

Posted on July 29, 2005 11:58 AM by Joel Comm

My post on the Arbonne business has continued to generate a great deal of interest. So I've decided to post my take on multi-level marketing in general here to start a new thread.

What are the problems with Multi-Level marketing?

1) Most people are not mature enough to work the business truly looking out for other people. Greed is a huge motivator in MLM. There is the facade of "I have something to tell you about that will change your life", but beneath the surface many MLMers are really just hoping to change their own lives.

2) I HATE the "warm market" principle. The first thing you are told to do is to tell your family and friends. AAARGH! I had a friend call and invite me to a meeting a couple weeks ago. It put me in a position of having to say "no". I don't want to go to meetings. I don't want to hear about the latest pill to make me look like Sean Connery. I don't want to hear hype. And I don't want to be in a business where it will depend on me to pump up others. Been there, done that. MLM can change the way you view family and friends. Be careful.

3) Most people don't have the skill set to do MLM. It is easy to get excited about world-changing product and incremental revenue graphically displayed on the white board. It's another to actually get out there and DO IT. People skils. Sales skills. Marketing skills. There is much more to MLM than meets the eye.

4) I have a business. If I can dabble in something on the side and make a few $$$, I'm all for it. But so many MLMers make MLM their lives. Suddenly, all their friends are in the same business. If you aren't in the business, you simply aren't with the "in" crowd.

5) There is usually an enticement to build inventory. In order to succeed with an MLM, you have to sell product. Most MLMers will encourage you to BUY an inventory of product when you first sign up. The reason? It will help you get to a higher commission level faster. This is true, but it is also indicative that the MLM wants you to promote to higher levels because it promotes the people above you to higher levels. Thus, the focus is taken away from retailing product to interetested parties to moving product for the sake of moving product. Again, good product will move itself anyhow, but even in Arbonne, the new recruit it encouraged to spend money to "fast track" their business.

Again, this is not an indictment of Arbonne. It is simply some truthfull observations regarding the MLM industry. Granted, there ARE people who CAN handle MLM. I like to think I know some of them. But the fact is that it is only for a minority of people, but it operates on the backs of the majority in order to survive.

But isn't that what the free market is all about, anyhow? :-)

The key to network marketing is the marketing. Warm market prospecting is like an admission to yourself that you have no idea how to target a market.

I always create a landing page and promote that so I'm not spending time on the phone doing low-yield tasks like prospecting and presenting.

  2. Joel Says:

Wrong, Marie. MLM organizations ENCOURAGE approaching your warm market first and foremost. Of course, those who know how to market will go above and beyond this, but that is not the MLM way to kickstart your biz.

  3. tinker Says:

I recently joined Arbonne which is a mlm business the product is great but the greed is horrible. I believe in helping people not taking advantage of them to make my life better. When i complained to my up line about the greedy behavior of my upline right above me I was told no big deal. I now have to quit the business for 6 months before I can rejoin under someone else who is less selfish and less greedy. Why do I have to be punished for my upline having No integrity? It is a very dishonest business and I would advise people to NOT get into it.

  4. Joel Says:

Tinker, you illustrate an example of the types of problems people encounter in MLM. I don't think Arbonne TEACHES greed. But the MLM concept certainly can foster the worst in people. I am sorry for your experience.

  5. Michael Says:

    Hi Joel,

I agree with some of your thoughts about network marketing, but as with all things there is good and bad. For one, there is a strong movement away from warm markets. Check out this website by Kim Klaver, her main theme is how to build a business WITHOUT talking to family, friends, and neighbors.

    http://www.whowho911.com/books.html

And she actually did it. No theory here.

Two, the best networkers eventually get into cold markets, there is no other way, even if they start out warm. But then they find there way back into warm markets, just not their really warm market of friends, family and neighbors.

If and when you get really good you can talk to your really warm market. I know from experience.

You are so right about the skill set. What people miss though is that this is a MARKETING business, which means you will go through a bunch of duds before you find a stud. The same is true of a product, we normally just don't see the process.

The inventory requirement is passe. Very few companies do that anymore, and the top three companies - all very upscale - have products/services that don't requite inventory anyway.

Yes MLM is a lifestyle if you want to be really successful at it. But here is the dirty little secret, that is true of any full commission sales job. It is just that network marketing is controversial, so people notice it as a negative thing. But it is just as true in non-controversial selling (like real estate).

At any rate, I am very much looking forward to reading your adsense book.

    take care,
    Michael

  6. Mario Says:

Like everything else. It depends on what it is your selling. I have joined http://onemillion.ws and am happy with it.
I think generalizations are bad. Sure there are a lot of scammy MLMs out there. But there are scammy business elsewhere both on and offline. I think you just have to be careful to pick the right product via Network Marketing. The hard part is not promoting an MLM business, it's finding the right one when everyone is claiming theirs is the right one. Pretty much like finding a good religion! It's hard to do when everyone knows the "truth!"

I recently joined Arbonne with my sister in law. She bought the 8 puppy set to jump start her business while I paid the $30.00 for the consultant fee. I went to a meeting yesterday for training and I was sorely disappointed when all the meeting talked about was how much money my sister in law was going to make. I was encouraged to buy at least 4 puppies and was told that there are managers who won't even deal with you unless you buy the 8 puppies. The puppies are the gold bags with the NutriMenC line. They cost 172. when you have a discount. I was gung ho a few days ago but now I am starting to rethink the goals and objectives of this business. I was discouraged after a salon owner didn't like the product and when I realized that I would have to buy at least 4 puppies to even give it a go. I am not sure what to do. I don't have the time to really invest in this business and now I feel obligated to continue.

  8. Alee Says:

Tinker: I am very sorry about the experience that you've experienced. Like Joel, I want to stress that Arbonne does not teach greed, in fact every training presentation and EOA I have seen teaches that in order for your Arbonne business to succeed, you must first be in it to help people, then and only then will your business grow and continue growing. I have been blessed with a great upline and for that I'm very grateful but I would have to say the experience you have been through may be a rarity.

Jules: My upline has never pressured me to purchase a REsults Approach set and you don't have to! I started my business "borrowing" a puppy dog from my upline. Once budget allowed, I started with 1 puppy dog set and have since grown that to 4. If you have any questions please email me. I would hate to see you quit because of that pressure. I'm here if you need help!

  9. Terri Says:

Jules: I also have a very supportive upline with Arbonne and have NEVER been encouraged to buy puppy dogs. We only do puppy dogs as fillers. The rest is just doing parties, which follows Arbonne's philosphy of Pure, Safe, and Beneficial! I have one, but like Alee, I borrowed one from my upline until I could get one of my own and she let me pay her back piece by piece! I think that is the true spirit of helping someone! Please feel free to email me anytime!

  10. Thomas Westgard Says:

Here's a detailed experience with MLM that I just had. Please note that it describes one actual bad experience, but also points out ways that MLM could have been done in an acceptable way.

The blog didn't allow html, so here's the raw data:

  11. Arbonne Consultant Says:

Tinker - I'm sorry that you experienced this greed! This is something that Arbonne does not support. In fact, I have a local consultant helping me who is not on my team. She says that she is educated constantly about being ethical! She has no reason to help me but is doing so just because its the spirit of Arbonne. And, I'd do it for someone as well!

I am working on it and for me, the jury is still out. There are things I love and things that have frustrated me. The 2 things that have kept me going are that I LOVE the products - for real and I'm not a quitter. The downsides for me right now are that I am having a tough time getting people to say yes, I don't have a lot of time as I have a corporate job as well and while I want to move quickly, my lifestyle won't allow it. I have back and forths depending on the day. But, I'm going to keep with it and not invest a lot in product. I am trying the items that I'm interested in, but that's all. And, so far I only have 2 "puppy dog" kits. And, that's been fine so far. I have yet to do a party - my first one cancelled. I've learned its going to take lots of nos to reach a yes. But, I'm also talking to EVERYONE that I meet about it even if its just so that they hear about it! Good luck to you!

When one examines the compensation plan of Arbonne one finds all five red flags of a “recruiting MLM*,” or product-based pyramid scheme. When these 5 red flags are all present, available data lead to the conclusion that the loss rate approximates 99.9%** – far worse than the average 90% loss rate of clearly illegal 1-2-4-8 no-product pyramid schemes. (Incidentally, from Arbonne's own reporting of income of participants (corrected for typical dropout rates for similar programs), the approximate 99.9% loss rate is confirmed.) In other words, of all participants who sign up for such recruiting MLM programs, approximately 99.9% can be expected to lose money – especially if purchases from the company to qualify for commissions and advancement in the scheme are subtracted as a business expense! See the statistics in the chart "Which Does the Greater Harm?"

1.Recruitment of participants is unlimited in an endless chain of empowered and motivated recruiters recruiting recruiters.

    2. Advancement in a hierarchy of multiple levels of participants is achieved by recruitment, rather than by appointment.

    3. Significant requirements that participants "pay to play" the game via product purchases.

    4. MLM company pays commissions and/or bonuses to at least 5 levels of participants, creating great "leverage" at the top.

    5. Most of the payout goes to the upline, rather than to the person selling products, creating excessive incentive to recruit and inadequate incentive to sell products (except to new recruits) – and an extreme concentration of income at the top of a hierarchy (pyramid) of participants.

Hello all. I have an interesting experience I would like to share. I work in a competing direct sales cosmetic company and HAVE NO UPLINE. Once my National retired, the momentum was gone and everyone lost their steam. Everyone quit. However, I am still building a successful business BECAUSE I do not ask any friends or family - in fact, they are the very last people to support you! Don't even bother with them. I build my business with complete strangers. And, I offer a list of 30 contacts to my new recruits to begin calling immediately - right out of the chute. I personally have about 5 - 15 guests at every meeting. Also, forget the pressure from those greedy upliners! You're right - they pressure you to get paid off of you. A good mentor has your best interests in mind and will recruit people until she/he gets a 'hot one' whose ACTUAL SALES will support their paychecks. Those greedy ones will not stay in the business long - I promise you. If you're serious about building a successful business, here's some advice: 1) quit for the six months and before signing with someone else INTERVIEW THEM not the other way around - make that manager/director/vp whatever bring their sales stats/pay stubs/bank statements - make them prove themselves worthy of your time and investment 2) think of a mission and a vision for your organization and design your whole philosophy around it. Remember that although there are certain requirements to follow - FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS - they are usually right! See you at the top! Irene

I just started my arbonne business in Omaha, NE. I've had opportunities with Mary Kay which I have turned down. I believe what makes arbonne so successful, is that the people who sell it, truly believe in the product. That's why I started my Arbonne business, because I beleive in the product. Contact me if you're in the Omaha area and interested in Arbonne.

  16. Mary Says:

I read this whole forum before deciding to become an Arbonne rep. I think the business can work if you have the right personality for it, but here are some observations after a full month in the business: The products I have tried (and I have now tried numerous Arbonne products) are very good. Some are excellent. That being said, they are very expensive and somewhat difficult to sell. I've given two "Intro to Arbonne" presentations and have done at least 6 REsults approach presentations, plus given numerous samples (not a cheap proposition) and catalogs to friends who live too far away to conveniently meet. So far this month I have sold exactly 3 RE9 sets and one Basics set. I am now in running for District Manager solely because I've purchased about $1500 worth of product. You cannot make any money in this business unless you can get others to sell too. The monthly sales requirements are simply too high. My upline and I have gotten to "second base," as the say with about 4 people (ie, you're in their home showing them the whole business presentation), but so far they are all just "thinking" about it.My "Regional Vice President" is a very kind, warm woman who promoted to this level in 5 months, but she had a very successful Southern Living business before she started and brought several "business builders" over with her. If you have an advantage like that, or have a few friends or family members who'd love to get into the business, I'd definitely try it. All you really need is 2 good people who will then recruit two others and so on to really get going. I teach part-time at a community college and at a state university, so I don't have so many of those built-in advantages. I tried to get my hairdresser to sell the line, but selling at retail is hard, since the stuff is expensive, and when he realized he'd have to personally buy $65 (plus tax and shipping)of product a month to get his commissions, he balked. BTW, this requirement is ridiculous--most Arbonne reps like the products and will buy more as they need them anyway. Arbonne says 80% of its clientele is repeat business. Well duh--it's all those reps trying to get their commission checks. But think of it--if you're at the "Nation" level, you have about 185 consultants downline of you spending $100 retail a month--that's $18,500 a month of your monthly volume. Sound a little pyramidish to you?Anyway, I am not trying to discourage anyone. I went to an Arbonne training in Irvine this past week, and over 20 people pulled up in white Mercedes, meaning they had reached Regional or National Vice President, so it does happen. But for most of you, it will not come easily, and you will have to spend more than a little money on it. But hey, if it doesn't work out, you can sell your stuff on EBAY. I see RE9 kits going for $130-145 on there daily!

  17. Jennifer Albrecht Says:

Hello all! I have many comments to make about this site. I am a 23 year old hairdresser and former educator for one of the largest companies in the world. I started with arbonne in July and promoted out to a Regional Vice president in 3months. March is my 9th month and from me down I will have presented 4 Mercedes on my team. The culture of this company is that you get ahead by helping others get ahead. It is not until you have 4 at the top that you will then have a maintained nation. I hit a strong 1st step nation this month. This team is the fastest growing team in the nation! Go Alaska!!! The experience has been life changing for me and for MANY on this team. My soon to be husband is going to be coming off his government job to work this with me full time. I have read and heard many negative things about multi level marketing. It is truly up to you. You are the only one who can make it work for you. You have to focus on why the lifestyle would benefit you. Is your why bigger and deeper than material things. My why was for my children! I do my best to offer my team the most ethical leadership I can. When you invest in your Re9 sets, yes it is for your volume. But as a hairdresser I HAD to buy scissors in order to do my job. You invest in any job you do. Its how you look at the investment. The monthly $100 volume!! I also have participated in body building and when arbonne believe you should be a product of the product this played a huge role. The supplements are unparalleled in what you receive. I can tell you at are discount you have no idea how much you are really saving to get the quality. Not only that but, you couldn't make a copy of 1 page in the catalogue for what we pay for them!! This company has truly changed my life. My "warm" market did work for me. My sister and mother are now Executive Regional vice presidents!! Plant seeds and harvest later! I do highly believe that you need the knowledge. Get on are university and learn, learn, learn. Get on the calls and ask tons of questions. We are part of a company that has Pure safe and BENIFICIAL products. That means they work! The personal growth that myself and my team have had is far greater than any $dollar$ Arbonne or any company could give me. If you believe in the products the business will grow. No body wants another sales pitch They want to know what it has done for you! I wish you all the best of luck.. Remember.."Some will, some wont, who cares..who's next" It will benefit and even change some body's life. It starts with the product.. Jen Albrecht..Making my dreams a reality. (907)230-5978

  18. Caleb Fairchild Says:

I have been working very part time with arbonne for 5 months. My original investment was $1100. That got me 4 re9's and my personal products. I looked at that like an investment and that is exactly what it was. I paid my investment back my third month. My checks scince then have averaged about $600 a month. Thats hardly getting rich but it is my second job for now. I have an extreamly demanding position on active duty with the airforce. I work with people who are stuck in the mindset that job security is the only way to go. Thats because these people are thinking middle class. It bothers me that so many people have so many negative things to say about Arbonne and MLM. If your up line doesnt help you. Learn the buisness for youself. No one (not even your up line) is going to build your buisness for you. Thats your job. There are three things you need in this buisness. Dreams, desire and, determination. It seems to me that many of the negative things said about arbonne and MLM are coming from people who lack the drive and responsability it takes to make this or any other buisness work. If you fail, take responsability for your part in that. People in general are lazy. Thats the reason for failure. Nothing in this world is free. It takes effort. I made a commitment of my time to arbonne when I started, and kept to it. I have never been discouraged about my extra $600 per month and, I garentee I will be a executive national vice presedent. I am taking a month of leave to work my buisness all this month and I WILL hit my awsome goel and then some. Im going to the top and Im not gonna look back. Job security is for weak minded people. The richest people in the world take risks. Dont get me wrong. I think without job secutity alot of the people who wrote into this site would starve. You can keep 9 to 5. As for me, Im going to the beach. If you are interested in the arbonne oportunity, or have a bad upline and need help e-mail me at caleb.fairchild@hotmail.com

  19. Michelle Says:

Caleb and Jennifer, it is great that you have had such success. Perseverence and discipline works for any business--including selling cars and real estate. Yes, you have to make an investment in any business. But Jennifer, if you buy $100 scissors to cut hair, you can usually make that back after a few haircuts. If business is slow one month, you don't have to start all over again to reach your quotas to move up to the next level. Caleb, you have to be spending at least $100 a month for your Arbonne personal buy, plus catalogs and samples, so you're netting more like $500 a month. If you're a district manager, that means you're selling about $12,000 a month of Arbonne--the equivalent of about 45 RE9 kits. I doubt you're busting your hump selling that much in skin care and vitamins every month, so chances are you've recruited a downline, and they are buying their "puppy dog" kits and RSVPs, etc and talking others into doing the same. Maybe they will stick with it and make it big--but chances are they won't. But so what? You can always recruit another Arbonne seller. There's nothing inherently wrong with all this, but it is not the fastest or easiest way to "financial freedom." Some people have a distaste for this type of selling. That doesn't make them weak-minded or afraid of risks.

  20. Dana Says:

Regarding Michelle's post: What is the "fastest and easiest way to financial freedom?" Just curious! And by the way, it's only $65.00 per month instead of $100.00 since consultants receive a 35% discount on all products (making the products a pretty darned good buy compared to many department store counters).

  21. Cereice Says:

    Joe, your animosity blinds you.

If you had even read those reports at ripoffreports.com you would have clearly seen that:

#1. The first two were dealt with (during a time when the co. was overhauling their systems of support). Consultants alike were at times inconvenienced during the summer of '05. There isn't one business that doesn't encounter a challenge or obstacle - Arbonne overcame it.

#2 ... the 3rd report was in no way a complaint filed against Arbonne, but rather just an unscrupulous human being.

Now, go to ripoffreport.com and I emplore you to type in the name of your favorite retailer, gas station, auto repair shop, fast food restaurant, or even fine dining restaurant. You will find [nearly, if not] all of these reputable businesses have pending reports/complaints filed against them (and many resolved as well).

There simply never will be a business machine that runs flawlessly at all times. You do yourself a diservice if you continue to allow yourself to be deluded.

  22. Michelle Says:

Dana: When you buy $100 worth of Arbonne at wholesale, you pay $65, yes. But you pay taxes on the $100 (add $7.75) and then 9.95 for shipping and handling. You also pay taxes on shipping and handling. So that $65 is now up to about $84. Now, maybe YOU pay that much for shampoo, sunscreen, and colon cleansers EVERY month, but most of us do not. The skin care sets last about 6 months--you simply do not need $84 worth of more Arbonne every month. A point comes when you sit around and wonder what to do with all the products piling up in your closet (stuff you are buying in order to get that $81 commission you earned.) It should be a requirement only for Regional VP's and up.

  23. Pauline Says:

Hi everyone: I have read all of the posts, some I agree with and others I disagree with. There is no perfect company out there, in my opinion. Arbonne is now in Canada, if there is anyone needing help or you are interested in the arbonne opportunity, contact me at arbonnepw@hotmail.com or call 250 338-9505

  24. Terri Says:

The MOST interesting thing ABOUT the ARBONNE is that many of the products say patent pending??? AND IT has been like that for a decade or more, I am wondering WHY it would be necessary for a patent to be in pending status that long, any way you look at it, it is a MLM, and those at the TOP of the scheme do the best, and the newbe's simply make the engine run....also, as for the person misspelling everything in their post they need to worry less about success and "goels" and more about being a half way intelligent human being...

  25. Jennifer Albrecht Says:

Hey all! Wow! I haven't checked up lately but how funny to see how some people have no sense of how this works! Obviously Michelle you are not successful with arbonne to have the train of thought you do. I hardly do any drops anymore let alone sell 40= kits. My best pay check was over $8500 so YES MAM that $65 was well worth while!!! I know I spend on average $150 a month to be exact! And Honey My scissors cost over $1200!!! If somebody came at me with $100 shears Id run! I LOVE ARBONNE!! I fell in love with the product first and the best thing over the income its provided is the personal growth. I would encourage you to devote at least 30min a day to personal growth. I'm not sure your profession but I wish you all luck in the world. Remember we are not born with are attitude, its a choice. Be happy for those around you and know your company before you bash all over people. If Caleb had sold $12000 in arbonne he would be a strong 1st step area! That's his goal this month. In real estate do you have the ability to leverage your time??? I would rather have 1% of 100 people's efforts than 100% of my own! Maybe some of you don't take care of your body from the inside out. Arbonne is about the body as a whole. If something is wrong internally it will show through out on your skin. My vitamins I order every month, 30 day supply! I also have chews and the sea salt scrub. I have no inventory other than what I may buy as give away prizes. You should look at why PURE, SAFE, and BENIFICAL is important when looking at what we do to are body's everyday. Have you listened to Candace Keefe??? You would know so much more about why this company is so unbelievable. I agree with everything arbonne suggest. We all start somewhere and $100 is nothing when the crap you buy at Wall greens or nordstrom for that matter could harm you! It what you put in your business. No where does arbonne say you have to do anything. You don't have to make money, you don't have to order anything, you don't have to get a discount. Id love to talk and share with you what you may be misunderstanding.

  26. Teresa Says:

It is like anything in life. You are either right or rich? The people who are complaining are probably the same people who make excuses for everything in life. They are most likely not happy with many aspects in their lives. Their inner world is attracting their outer world. Also, only 1% to 2% of the population are entrepreneurs. The ones who are expressing the greed are usually greedy themselves.

ARbonne is what you make it. Network marketing is going to change more and more each day. Why is it that some of the richest men in the world own a few networking companies.

Basically you are an entrepreneur or not? Not everyone is able to own a franchise. Not everyone is able to handle a millionaire dollar business. Having razor like focus is what separates the different consultants.

One more comment. The ones who are complaining are also BROKE!!

  27. Rebecca Says:

Arbonne is the most incredible business out there. I have always known network marketing was the way to go, but I tried many different companies and the money just was not there. When I found Arbonne I could not believe the compensation plan. The money is there, you just have to reach out with a positive attitude and get it. I started with just the $29. and in 10 months had the Mercedes. I have since helped 5 others get theirs. You will not succeed in ANYTHING if you aren't willing to help others reach their goals. When you do that, it NATURALLY helps you too.
Arbonne only claims to have the best that nature and science has to offer.
Some people you can't say enough right things to and some you can't say enough wrong things to. If you are in the first catagory you will have a hard time in everything in life.
The ONLY thing between you and success is YOU.

  28. Darlene Says:

About the $100 per month "purchase" w/Arbonne...this is $100 a month in your personal number, NOT necessarily your own purchases. You are free to sell product to reach that $100 requirement each month w/Arbonne! LOL!! Yes, YOU personally don't have to order $100 worth of retail product for your own personal use, if that bothers you, sell some product and there you go, $100 requirement-covered. The same with the $1000 in your own number requirement to promote to District.

It's not easy, or everyone would be doing it!
I know a consultant at District level whose WHOLE business is nothing but RETAIL CUSTOMERS. She can sell product! AND btw, she is also earning 35% off the retail price of each product she sells at full retail value. All consultants do.

Also, you don't HAVE to buy an RE9 set or multiples to get going w/your Arbonne business. That's not a requirement. You could hostess your own parties, and from your retail sales earn the bonus of $100 retail product for $20 with your party total of $250 retail or more...and BUILD your RE9 set with a few qualifying parties/sales ....and one more thing...have you checked out the COST of starting your own business? I looked at franchises before happening upon Arbonne, and let me tell you, my net worth is not near what is required to purchase a franchise, except a Curves and there's one on every corner in my town. Curves wouldn't even tell me how much "on average" a Curves business makes, gross or net. At least w/Arbonne, you know what a consultant is making "on average" at every promotion level.

Where else can you start your own home-based business for so little with so much training and help?

  29. Kelly Says:

I am just getting started with Arbonne this month. I invested $1000 for 4 kits and a few other things - I also got several free products which I will use so people can sample other items. I am very excited about this opportunity and I have never been one to think twice about network marketing. I think if you work hard at it, you will be rewarded.
I agree this is a small investment compared to other choices out there.

I HAVE ENJOYED READING BOTH THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE FEEDBACK ABOUT ARBONNE AND MLM BUSINESSES IN GENERAL. I BECAME A INDEPENDENT CONSULTANT WITH ARBONNE AT THE BEGINNING ONLY BECAUSE SOMEONE ASKED ME TO, I HAD NEVER BEFORE HEARD ABOUT ARBONNE OR WHAT IS WAS ALL ABOUT BEFORE IN MY LIFE. I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WITH MY MEMBERSHIP FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS UNTIL I STARTED USING THE PRODUCTS, THEN I BECAME A PRODUCT OF THE PRODUCT. I AM NOT WERE I DESIRE TO BE IN THIS COMPANY AS OF YET, BUT, IN DUE TIME I WILL BE. EVERYONE HAS TO BE PERSUADED IN THERE OWN MIND WHICH WAY TO GO OR WHICH COMPANY TO JOIN. I'VE BENEFITED FROM USING THE PRODUCTS MYSELF AND SELLING AND SHARING THEM WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS. I WILL PROMOTE SOMEDAY AND WHEN I DO THEN I WILL, BUT, UNTIL THEN I AM GOING TO KEEP USING AND SHARING AND OF COURSE SELLING THE PRODUCTS. I BELIEVE ALL FEEDBACK IS BENEFICIAL SO PEOPLE WILL ATLEAST HAVE AN IDEAL ON WHAT TO EXPECT... EMAIL ME WITH QUES. OR CONCERNS ABOUT ARBONNE:CEDDRIC101@MYARBONNE.COM OR CHECK OUT MY WEBSITE:WWW.SOMETHINGSPECIAL4ME.MYARBONNE.COM, AS ALWAYS, HAVE A BLESSED JOURNEY!!!!! GOOD LUCK IN REACHING YOUR DREAMS!!!!!!!!!!!

Just went into qualification for RVP with Arbonne - I am a 24 year-old actress in Chicago and certainly had all strikes against me - money, time, not knowing anyone...but in the end, if you decide to go for it (and stop letting others' opinions bully you around, positive and negative alike), nothing can get in your way. congrats to all of you, "see you at the top"!

  32. abml Says:

My best friend is an Arbonne consultant and recently asked me to consider becoming a consultant. I am not sure if this is the thing for me. I have so many questions and don't want to get into this if I am not really ready to make a full commitment to the company.
I am a full-time college student and I don't have a large amount of money to invest into Arbonne, and don't want the money I invest (if I do this thing) to be wasted, I just can't afford that. I have used the product and I know they are very quality products. Of course I would love to drive the Mercedes one day, but first I would just like to have some extra income. So, some of my questions...The first fee is $29 or you could buy the better package for $79.95. What else will I have to pay? I just want some answers from someone who started at the bottom and is doing very well. Please don't give me the "arbonne talk". I think I can be successful with this company, so I really don't want to read any more about how great it is. Just give me the facts and where you started and some real numbers, not what I can potentially earn. Okay, more questions...Everyone always says it takes hard work to be successful, I know this, but give me a real life story of someone in my position earning an average of even $1000 a month. Starting with just the $29 fee can I really earn thousands on a monthly basis? How do I get people to sign up that aren't interested in investing tons of money either? Can I make it to the level I want by just signing up people at the $29 level and selling product? I need some real answers here b/c I am not going to risk my friendship over this "business" opportunity. Thanks for your help and I'm sure I'll have more soon...

  33. Shelley Couzins Says:

What is the best way to get started in selling Arbonne. Of course i have been told to sell to my family and friends but how do you really get started. I have to admit I really believe in the products and have seen a HUGE difference from using them. It is not something you see over night but even with in a week I had results. Should I really go out and buy alot of the products when getting started????

  34. Jessica Says:

    abml-

Your questions are very good and very valid to ask. Make sure that if you do sign on, that your upline is willing to help you and answer those questions honestly.

I am a District Manager with Arbonne and will likely hit First Step Area this month or possibly Area based on how things are going. It takes a lot of hard work, but for me, it is worth it. Don't get me wrong, I've wanted to quit before, but The greatest financial minds in the world not only recommend it, but are often also involved in it. They all say give it at least 1 year. I've been in for 4.5 months now. A brief note on this: Robert Kiyosaki (author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad) often recommends that the average Joe get into a Network Marketing company (he always cautions that it needs to be a good one with good training and products...Arbonne qualifies as both, even in his eyes). The reason for his recommendation is that Network Marketing is a relatively "safe" way for the average person to LEARN business. Personal growth, he also stresses, is strengthened because a person has to learn how to face and deal with rejection. As humans, we all need to learn how to deal with rejection in a healthy way. Sadly, many never do and often that is why there is such a negative attitude by some about NM companies. You can only make it what you want it to be...no one can do it for you.

Anyway, on to your actual questions:

People can and do make it to all levels in Arbonne with very little initial money in. Now, lets shed some light on this. The cost of a McDonald's Francihse is over $1,000,000 (yes, that is MILLION. Yikes!! And that does NOT include the building, land, equipment, insurance, food, etc. $29 plus some business items are a drop in the bucket comparatively. Heck...$5000 would be a drop in the bucket compared to that.

    I digress...

I do not recommend buying the pack for the $79. It is of little value in my opinion, but if your upline has found it useful, then you should probably listen to what they have to say on the subject. The method I used was to "Arbonize" my home. I bought products that I wanted to try as well as a few extra things to let my friends sample. My investment was close to $1000, but I did get over $2200 worth of products, so not a bad deal really.

Currently, I have several "clients" and a team of around 11 or 12 people and I make around $300 a month. I do buy the required $100 retail a month so I get my paychecks from Arbonne, but most months I have enough sales to meet this, and then, I of course use all the products so I have my own stuff to buy as well. I have never found this a problem, and have always made more than the $65 out of pocket back in my commissions check.

Assuming I reach my goal this month, my check will be much closer to $1000. I'm not sure what my May check was for yet, but it was probably closer to around $500. I'm not out to make millions in a month, but I want my freedom back. I want to be able to work a job I love, even if that means it is for very little money. But the bills keep coming as you know, so now I am working a job I hate just to pay the bills.

Anyway, this CAN be done. As you seem to fully understand, it will take work. The must haves as I see them are this:
    1. You need to use the products yourself...so that is an investment. How little or how much is up to you though.
    2. You need some business cards, but the type that you buy from the store and print out yourself will suffice until you are making some money back to invest in "nice" ones.
    3. Samples...you will need some of these. I buy sample packs of the face systems, but everything else, I buy the full size and then go to the store and buy little cheap plastic sample cups to give people. The simple reason for this is because it still counts as retail volume. They don't get the "packaging" per se, but if the product is great, that is the least of my worries. How many or few samples, is again, up to you. If you are going to get out there and hit it hard, I'd say invest upfront in a number of sample so that you are always prepared.
    4. A good day-planner and the discipline to use it. This is a business of appointments and nothing is more valuable to a person than their time. So value it, by keeping your promises...be it an appointment, call-backs, etc. This is vital.
    5. A tote bag: this may seem odd, but a good tote bag is a great tool. I bought the Arbonne Tote and put pictures of me standing next to "my" Mercedes. I get more people to ask me about my business with that bag, than any other way. Plus, I always have samples and information available in those times that I run into someone at the grocery.
    6. A genuine concern and care for people. This, coupled with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn is priceless.

All in all, this stuff need not add up to $1000 dollars...it really need not add up to even $500. Just remember though, this IS a serious business. Just like buying a franchise is a serious business. Businesses require investments. The more someone invests, likely the more that person is to work his/her butt off to make that investment back. Most need to invest some because for most people a loss of $29 isn't enough of a threat to get me out there working my business when things get hard (and they do). But also remember that you will get the tax advantages and you will get to write off your business aids...so keep track!

These are the things that I think are vital to buy at the beginning. But, for a bit of Arbonne talk and network marketing talk in general...you are investing in yourself. If you want to control your income, the ONLY way is to do purly commission based sales. Some might call this greed. I call it taking back the control in my life. I have never been paid what I was worth in any job. But worse still...and most appauling...I have rarely ever been treated with the respect I deserve as a human being. And that, more than anything else, is what NM means to me...freedom from employer mistreatment. I realize that not everyone is mistreated in their jobs, but I speak from my own experience. I will someday drive my Mercedes. I will be able to monitarily support my friends who want to volunteer to help in 3rd world countries (I have several). And I will not have to get up and go to work ever day for an employer who neither respects nor appreciates me. Sorry for the long ramble, but I do hope this helps a bit.

    The sky is the limit...

  35. Rain Says:

I signed on as a consultant with Arbonne, and I want to say that this is a reputable company and it is filled with positive men and women. I encourage EVRYONE who is thinking of this to look up Harvest Partners, who is financial backer of Arbonne. Also, they are part of the Direct selling association, which only accepts network marketing companies that abide by certain guidelines. I am the Director of Operations at a financial firm, and Arbonne really has already changed my life. There are a lot of people ranting about the 5 ways to tell if its a pyramid etc., but lets keep this in mind, if I am able to hop over the person who sponsored me, and the person who sponsored her, and so and and so on, (which I have), this is NOT in fact top heavy. You actually can not promote to a higher commission level withouth helping others. I have clients who purchase the products at retail, dermatologists, dr.'s and salons who all are amazed with the formulations. You don't need to sell the products, they sell themselves. You also DO NOT need to make an initial investment, other than the $29 to join, but your business WILL NOT grow as quickly, thats all. I did decide to purchase 5 RE9 kits, and ihave not had one complaint, I have high end clients and reputable practices encouraging patients and clients to use Arbonne.
Visit Arbonne.com to learn the truth.
This is an amazing, well founded company, with leaders who have diverse backgrounds, and values that any human being can appreciate.
I would encourage everyone to try the Arbonne products, and look around at who is endorsing them; the American Modeling Association, Oxygen Magazine, Health and Fitness Magazine, Kelly Ripa has mentioned the Arbonne Products and the list goes on and on.
Word of mouth is powerful, and that is all Network Marketing is.
    "See you at the top!"

  36. MLM Hater Says:

Ohh Arbonnes Great Arbonnes wonderful I love My Arbonne. Please Stop it!! All I got to say is you arbonne reps and most MLM reps are a pain in the you know what. Its not about anything but pushing and shoving your products down our throats and making it so uncomfortable to say no to buying your products. I know whenever I hear any talk about it I'm running in the other direction. Products are good but when I want to buy something I will. Please try and talk about something else in life. It sure is a good way to scare friends away. Some of us have other things more important in life then talking about how great Arbonne is. What you need to see is the sigh of relief of your friends when you finally stop trying to sell yourself and product move on.

  37. Tim Says:

I am writing in response to Jennifer's two posts I recently was at a party in SO CAL and it seems to me that YOU MUST INVEST A LOT MORE THAN JUST the 29 initial sign up fee to be succesful. WHAT Is MY TRUE out of pocket $expense$ going to be and WHAT should I BE PREPARED to hand out as samples at a party. Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to grow the ARBONNE business without talking to and/or pressuring family and friends. Thanks in advance

  38. Beth Says:

I just want to say that I am looking into starting a business in Arbonne but am very confused. I went to a meeting last week and was told that there is no investment like with Mary Kay and some of the others. When my friend came with the person who signed her into the Arbonne family, he tells me that it would be best if I spent about $829.00 to get started. Also, it was to buy several of the RE9 kits. I was also told at the meeting that we don't need to stock product as Mary Kay does and then there is this guy trying to sell me 4 of the same product. Why do I need 4 of anything at once? I would love to think that I can start this business and make all this money, however, all I have heard from anybody is encouragement to get people under me and not necessarily to sell the product. When I asked if I could just sell the product, which I agree is very expensive, I was told that my business won't grow if I do it that way. I don't see how it wouldn't. Making 35% versus 4% sounds like a lot better deal to me. And, what happens when you make everyone around you a consultant and nobody is buying? Ever heard the phrase "too many chiefs and not enough indians"? Those are my concerns. If anyone has some insight that I haven't thought of please feel free to email me.

  39. Nicole Says:

Joel, you're negative. Thanks for the motivation.

  40. Joan Says:

My very dear friend started talking to ma about Arbonne, and how she was thinking about getting into it, and wanted me to join her. She told me wonderful stories of women, who we both knew, who were making 13,000.00 a month. Wow! Imagine that. How could I not be intrigued. But you know, it isn't really about the product and selling it, it is about getting other people to sell it too. That's were I find it distasteful. I bet this is the best product ever (patents pending...), but then why aren't we selling that, instead of the "arbonne way"? I am a very enthusiastic person, and I know I could do this, but I don't want to invest so much money (which seems to your advantage when you do), especially since I am from a humble lifestyle. Now all you reps out there are telling me it is an ivestment in my family's future, but what if .... Hey I am a hard worker, and dedicated, perhaps I just need to say no. What happens when no one orders and I have to supplement it???

  41. joy Says:

re:why arbonne is still patent pending: that is itetional. we keep changing our formulations so that our products remain arbonne's property. your upline should be able to tell you this info.

  42. Robin Hancock Says:

I have enjoyed reading all the Arbonne stories. I signed on with Arbonne just a few weeks ago. I had never heard of the product and actually went to a party. I ended up purchasing the RE9 kit because I was given the opportunity to try the product beforehand and loved it. I signed up as a consultant because I wanted the 35% discount. It wasn't until later when I looked up the website that I decided to look into becoming an active consultant. I don't believe it to be a pyramid scheme and I know there are people out there that are skeptical. I had a friend that was interested until she realized it was MLM. Yes, that is what metwork marketing is. I don't see it any different than alot of other home based businesses like, Tupperware, Discovery Toys, Mary Kay, Partylite. They all talk about a "team" or "group". Another good example, I am sitting here looking at a Lia Sophia catalog that I got from a friend that had a party and reading testimonials from zone, region and division managers. Is this not the same as an "upline". I have been to these parties where they have a box to check off if you would like to become a consultant right on the order form. I think that with Arbonne the key is the product. They have wonderful products. Health and Wellness and Anti-aging is what the baby boomers are wanting and they drive the market. I look forward to a successful future with Arbonne. I am in the quad cities (Iowa/Illinois) so if there is anyone interested in joining our team please contact me. robinhancock@frontiernet.net

  43. Jane Freeman Says:

Network Marketing allows people to have the lifestyle they want, work from home on their own time, and be their own boss. I have been a consultant since spring of 2005. The Arbonne products sell themselves. I would not be in this business if I did not believe in these products. My goal is to share with others and teach others how to get the same discount that I get as a consultant. If someone wants to be a business builder, then that is great. If someone wants to be a consultant to get products at a discount, then that is fine too. This business is not for everyone, but these products are!!! If you are interested in learning more about Arbonne I would be glad to talk to you.

  44. Jane Freeman Says:

  45. myarbonne consultant Says:

Consider this. Your up line signs you up in Arbonne and got you to pay perhaps for 4 RE9 kits at only 35% off (to increase her volume) and did not tell you to use the 50% discount (RSVP1 & 2) NOR give you the option to purchase the RE9 sample packs which are tax deductible write-offs but does not count towards volume. She then spends more of your money by telling you to "Arbonnize" your house so she can benefit from you. Because of the spending, you're then pushed into first step District without any legs to support you. Congratulations, you've just been set up for a big scramble & fall. When you quit, all your down line friends & family go to her. Beginners beware. Interview your sponsors before you sign up. There's no mandatory purchase, do not be fooled. After signing up & training yourself at the Arbonne University, you'll begin to realize that your sponsor may not be out there to save you money but to increase her volume. Too late. There's no way of changing sponsors except through inactivity for 12 months. If you want to quit, send all your products back within 45 days of purchase (and you'll be asked by Corporate to resign if the inventory is > $1,000 SRV). Finally, there's light at the end of the Arbonne tunnel. Don't let the sponsors pressure you into buying the RE9 kits. You do not need the volume when you first sign-up. Get the 50% discount through RSVP and jointly purchase the RE9 sample packs ($1.50 per pack. Sample packs reach more people than the RE9 kits. RE9 kits are not business aids and there are no tax write-offs. In fact, Arbonne does not encourage the use of RE9 as 'Testers' regardless of what VPs say. The VPs themselves are not employees but independent consultants who will gain from your RE9 purchases. It's all A GAME. And what goes around comes around. Pay checks of a few hundred dollars are not net profit but gross profit before deduction of 'Tester' RE9 kits, cost of seminars/books/ gas/shipping/tax. And Tax is paid on Retail Price, not the discounted price.

    Joel,

If mlm is so bad, why does warren buffet, the 2nd richest man in the world and Donald Trump (definately making money)endorse it amongst countless others? Swimming is not for everybody either, until you learn how. : )

  47. chris clark Says:

There is a new and exciting company starting april and the product is amazing, Im currently an arbonne consultant and like the product but the business plan is way too expensive and agressive, my wife and I have decided to drop arbonne and pursue the new opportunity with a business that has a low start up cost, no time limit to make the next level, and a plan that alows you to gain business volume whether you sign them up or someone else signed them up,,, everyone wins. Its the best business plan I have ever seen and the product is even better. If you would like some information on this new opportunity that hasnt been flooded in the us market, please feel free to email me at zuppacucina1@aol.com If your in Arbonne then I would love to talk to you about another great opportunity.

  48. kel Says:

I have a few comments. I did not buy the kits (I bought one for myself) but didn't enjoy the thought of dropping them off for people- it's not my style. I only see the "need for greed" at months end. I am very close to district but I want to get there and "stay" I know it bumps my upline up closer to her mercedes.
I am all about samples - and letting the person come back to you. I will not hound people either and believe my 'team' will consist of people building and growing their own way.

Anyway my question is this - can you sell the items on e-bay.
I have no desire but a friend would join if she could do this. I have read you can not -
just curious. I want to be ethical - and not lead her on.
    e-mail me kel@h-power.us

  49. Stef Says:

Joel--Arbonne DOES NOT encourage new consultants to spend a lot of money! I just had a new consultant have a presentation at her home--it was a huge success and she received all of her products FOR FREE! I know a lot of companies require that you carry inventory. Arbonne disourages it. Please get your facts straight!

  50. Kurt Rademacher Says:

The questions I want answered are: Where do these people who are able to do so well live? Do they live in big cities? Large, rich suburbs? What income level do people have who are buying these products? My wife is thinking about joining Arbonne. We both have concerns about making money from the work done by the people lower on the pyramid. (Let's call it what it is.)
We both feel that selling the products, not getting others to do it for you is the proper way to make money.
We live in a sparsely populated area in northern Minnesota where the average wage is maybe $11 per hour.
Will people with low incomes really buy products this expensive. I sure would not. I make $9.25 per hour.
There is a reason there are no Mercedes or Porsche dealerships anywhere near here. Could this same reason be a reason not to try to sell Arbonne products here?
The woman who is trying to get my wife to join has been a consultant for three months. She has not made a dime. She is really in people's faces, (mostly trying to get them to sign up under her as she would rather have other people do the real work).
If anyone can answer these questions, I would really appreciate it.

  51. pskrueger Says:

    Kurt-
This is kind of off subject but I work in finance and today I recvd a referral with your same last name weird huh?

The main person in my area who has been doing Arbonne for 3 1/2 yrs now is Lynn Hagedorn - she lives in Blair Ne - a town of around 6000 people or so. I've attended her meetings and even seen her webstats - she's in the 40-50k income per month club - she's quiet and humble, a wife and a mother. Now she travels quite a bit speaking and encourging others - how wonderful. It's true you do build a team which is the same in any sales or distributor business from Cell phones to the Schwan food company - you build a team of go getters but you yourself don't stop working it. It's best to get revenue from all venues - you learn this as you go and glue yourself to your upline and duplicate what they do. You can sell it straight from the catalog - or offer your own discount, say 10-20 % off. I think in your area it may be somewhat challenging if the avg income is that low BUT think outside the box - venture in to the next big city and hit all the salons and spas. Do you know people in other states - call them up ask them for the simple favor "to just listen" all you want is for people to try the products and listen - they decide from there. I have people that refuse to get online so of course I order for them and I extend them my discount because these orders help toward my monthly personal retail volume. I know I'm talking alot but it is a good company - the products are great (i've used clinique, lancome, Obaji, skinceuticals) I actually see results and they have so many products and many are geared toward health and wellness. The bottom line is - you can do this or your wife can IF she is willing to step out of her comfort zone and run it like a real business - especially if you are supportive. You can email me if you have more direct questions or just need to learn more. psacco@hughes.net

  52. Skeptical Says:

    Attention Arbottes:

You can kid yourself all you want about helping others, the product, etc. The reality is that you could care less if anyone really buys the product, just sign up more recruits. That's how you keep the money coming in. So what if a recruit doesn't have the money to get started. They can just "get a credit card and put it on that." How do they live with themselves! It is all about greed, from the top to the bottom. And if any of you Arbots took the time to do real research instead of believing what they spoon-feed you, you'd know that the "Swiss Lab" making only Arbonne is a hoax. There are many products that come out of that building, not only Arbonne.

I just shake my head in disbelief. You can make a lot of money selling cars, and you are really selling cars, not trying to get someone else to sell them.

  53. Kari Says:

I purchased my website a couple of days ago. I put in a request yesterday for them to cancel my website. I have not heard back-- not even a notice that they received my email. I sent another cancellation request today... And also a customer service request stating I would like to cancel my website account. Has anyone had any problems with cancelling their website within the 30 day grace period?

  54. Alex Says:

Your comments are very insightful and as I read them I thought I could have written them myself. I would add that the reason most people do not succeed with it is the programs encourage people to take advantage of others because ideas are presented in a way to make people think they can be lazy and do well.

  55. R Says:

I too have been in this industry, and also in some other MLMS....and have worked very hard. I am the type to put 110% into everything I do...and when you see $14 checks, you do get discouraged.

I now found my company which is set to launch this spring, and I will just say that in my first month I supplemented my full time salary!

If you would like information on a truly ground floor company, with a lot of recognition and notariety, that is sure to be a guaranteed success, please email me at r41170@gmail.com

You keep your commissions, it is easy to mantain, and receive a great check on your downline. It is very easy, honest, and straight forward...not to mention manageable! :)

  56. Saundra Jackson Says:

I am so glad that I am in Sendout Cards. If all of you successful Arbonne reps will send me your mailing address and birthday I will send you a card. Thats my MLM sending hugs and congratulations in the mail. Keep on Arbonneing.

You must believe in what you do, not what others believe. I sometimes don't approve of Internet marketing but I do it.

  57. R Says:

Again, I have known many family and friends who have been in this particular company...and have worked hard for small paychecks...

Anyway, my company just launched this past month...and it is with the 2 of the most noted Dermatologists in America...their products were #1 in retail, and continue to win numerous awards...they are well-established, and professional...they are the creators of Proactiv!

Anyway, I surpassed my full-time income, and am here to stay! I think there is true beauty in a non-saturated market, and being on the TRUE ground-floor like we are.

Be cautious, do research, choose a company with a proven track record...and remember, timing is everything!!! Statistically those who start a company in their first couple years are those that make notable incomes.

    Best wishes to all!

I have realized that for me being an Arbonne Independent Consultant is a great way to meet fun and interesting people, get a discount on products that really work for me (and make great gifts), and can provide a few bucks with not a whole lot of work for me, as I know people who love the products -- so I started with a few customers already. I think it would be a lot of work to get to that white Mercedes level, but nothing ventured, nothing gained, right? :)
