Kontera - Making Friends with AdSense

Posted on February 20, 2007 12:04 AM by Joel Comm

Ever since Google changed its Terms Of Service to allow other contextualized ad systems on the same pages as AdSense, I've been busy taking another look at its competitors.

And what I've found was that Kontera has been pretty busy.

Kontera has created an ad system that turns keywords on a Web page into double-underlined links. When users mouse over those links, they get a floating tool box containing an ad. It's unobtrusive and looks good. Heck, it's even fun.

I wrote a short guide to Kontera's AdLinks system about eighteen months ago but since then, they've gone through a whole bunch of changes. For one, their ad system isn't called AdLinks any more; it's called ContentLinks. And for another, their ads look a lot better. (They're a bit like small TV screens now instead of flying boxes.)

The biggest changes though have happened behind the scenes. The vast bulk of Kontera's efforts has gone into improving its contextualization engine -- which might explain the name change. They've been trying to find a balance between relevant ads and high-paying ads.

Whatever they've been doing, I love the result.

I was a bit concerned that if I put more than one contextualized ad system on my pages, I'd just be showing the same ads for the same keywords in different places. I was worried that my users might feel that they're getting bombarded with ads. That hasn't happened at all.

In fact, the two systems have worked very well together. They're showing different ads, highlighting different terms and they work in completely different ways. If I'm not getting a click one way, there's a great chance that I'll be getting it another.

I have to be careful where I place my ContentLink ads, just as I have to make smart decisions about where to put my AdSense units. But Kontera has now made that a lot easier with zone tags and div tags.

The bottom line is that your pages' AdSense units can now have a friend -- and he pays.

    Hi Joel,
One question... I've written Kontera but no answer yet. Maybe you could answer for all of us in a future blog.

Do you have to put the tags on ALL of your pages, or can you put it only on the content pages where you want to have links?

I signed up for Kontera when you posted about it a couple of weeks ago. It hasn't been mind-blowing, and certainly doesn't equal my AdSense income for the same site, but so far it's brought in quite a few extra dollars which, as you say, were just laying on the table.

Kontera approved me within a week, maybe less. Ran one site for a week and added 3 more approval took less than 5 days the second time. . So far everything has been excellent.

Why isn't there an affiliate program with Kontera ContentLinks e-book? (I'm sure Joel will never see this. Not sure who to contact.)

  9. Joel Comm Says:

    Hi Joel,

Thanks for the great inside information on Kontera and helping the "little people" to get in even with the few page impressions my site has received thus far. You are a great mentor and I hope one day to proclaim to the world that I owe my financial success to God and Joel Comm.

On week on and a supplementary $10+ from Kontera, it sure promises to be a great friend. I see now that it is possible to 'leave money on the table' if you dont buy and read Kontera secrets. That is my next crucial assignment.

Thank you mentor, for this admission into the elite web premiership league.
