Kontera

Google AdSense ads have become ubiquitous. It's hard to find many sites that aren't running their contextual text advertisements.

However, there ARE other options available for site publishers wishing to monetize their web pages. I recently came across a site called Kontera. They have a different approach to contextual advertising. Rather than display ads directly on the site, their engine looks at a web page and highlights certain keywords on the page by placing a double blue line underneath the word.

You might even see an example of this on this web page. Simply run your mouse over the link, and voila, advertisement that may provide additional useful information for my readers. Try it!

If you own a site, you may want to take a look at putting Kontera on your pages.

    Hi Joel,

How do you see Kontera competing with Google's AdSense? Does Kontera provide an alternative or an enhancement?

If Kontera is good, or even an alternative, how long before Google introduces a similar feature?

It does seem that Google itself has become ubiquitous.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Kontera is an alternative to AdSense, most likely. Google's TOS is not exactly clear on whether or not the Adlinks units are a violation. But some people are making good money with Kontera.

  3. Aaron Says:

My biggest concerns with these new companies is getting paid. Has Kontera paid you?

Another problem with these new contextual ad companies is that they burst onto the scene with a new technology that is supposed to make them better. Adsense is successful not because of some whiz bang technology, but because they have millions of advertisers behind their system.

What about Kontera? Where do their advertisers come from?

  4. Joel Says:

I've used Kontera for a long time now. They do pay and it is worth it for me to continue with them. Their advertisers come from their own system.

Hi Joel. How come I couldn't see any Kontera-highlighted keywords on your website?

Joel, I am never a great fan of Kontera and was surprised to see you using it on your site! How much cpc it gives you ?

Trying to receive payment from Kontera seems to be near impossible. Just tonight, I've removed their advertising from all of my HubPages, disgusted with the lack of payment. I've had their ads running since implementation and even wrote asking after payment.

AdSense may be the better alternative--at least you get paid.
