Katherine Hepburn 1907-2003

'Tis a sad day for fans of the "old" movies. One of the last great living legends is no more. Katherine Hepburn passed away at the ripe old age of 96.

About 12 years ago, Mary and I went through a period of watching tons of old movies. The stars of old includeed Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Spencer Tracy, Gary Cooper, and Katherine Hepburn. My personal favorite is The Philadelphia Story, which co-starred Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

Ms. Hepburn worked plenty during her life. Her portfolio ran the gamut, from slapstick comedy to gutrenching drama.

Only a few of the greats are still alive, including Bob Hope. Sigh...

Who will people refer to in the next generations as the greatest actors of OUR generation? Robert Deniro? Al Pacino? Meg Ryan? Julia Roberts? I hesitate to think that any of these can hold a candle to the actors of days gone by, who depended upon their acting skills rather than snappy editing, commercial soundtracks, and slick marketing campaigns. As they say, they just don't make 'em like they used to.

Goodbye Ms. Hepburn.

I was very saddened to hear of Ms. Hepburn's passing, especially so soon after Gregory Peck. Two of the last who can truly be said to be "all-time-greats". Katherine's legacy will live on to enthral new generations in the years to come, thanks to her wonderful performances being preserved on film for all time. My favourites are "The Philadelphia Story" and "The African Queen" and also the original of "Little Women."
Plus, she was one hell of a feisty lady and anybody who can live for 96 years happily sticking two fingers up at the establishment and convention will always get my vote.

Now I don't idolise anybody, but Katherine Hepurn was the one exception; I grew up with her movies, she broke so many boudries and refused to conform to Hollywood/gender stereotypes, even in the face of constant criticism.

    She was a true inspiration.
