mate I'm a bit concerned with this.
1. This service is based upon taking what other people have written and reordering it to be presented as your own work. I see no where where sources are credited - sounds a little too close to plagiarism to me. They say it's not in their FAQ and perhaps it's technically not against the law - but if i submitted an essay in a class made up completely of others work with no sources I'll bet my lecturers wouldn't see it this way.
2. One of their selling points is that you can write an article on a topic without knowing anything about it. This doesn't really sit well with me. To me it's creating content just for the sake of it and could well be irresponsible.
The example he uses in his video is on defensive driving - the latest sentence 'these techniques could well save your life'....
I think this illustrates it pretty well - writing something you know nothing about that makes a claim like that....
3. I've seen how some bloggers are using this very system - they don't do the editing that he talks about in his video and end up creating jibber - splogs no less.
Joel - I'm a bit concerned - you've got a good rep and have real influence over people but are recommending a product that leaves me feeling really uncomfortable.

Hey Darren... those are all valid concerns! However, this is just a tool. It is up to people to use it responsibly. There will always be those who will and those who won't. But I always encourage people to stay "white hat" and do things right. Believe me... I have been solicited to promote more than my share of products which are truly questionable. I think this one manages to provide a valuable service with plenty of opportunity to do it legitimately.
And bottom line is if you aren't comfortable using it, then it isn't for you.
I appreciate your concern as well... when you going to visit the States?

point taken Joel - I guess I'm just yet to see anyone use a tool like this in a legitimate and worthwhile way (and have seen plenty of people using them in ways that just frustrate me).
I guess we could apply the arguement to many things in life - putting tools in the hands of people can be a pretty dangerous thing. But I'll leave the debate at that.
I'll be in the US in October for the Blog Cruise!

Joel, I agree with Darren on this. And, I too respect your reputation.
I'd like to add a little related info here for those people who decide
to populate their website content with non-original compositions.
** For those of you who may not have run into this info as yet:
The Google algorithm update is coming - soon -
Just one of the updates includes an increased focus on duplicate content filters. The duplicate content filters will have more sophistication to determine what site was the original owner for the content. This will eliminate at least 3 problems:
1) Scraper sites stealing content and profiting from it.
2) Reduce the effectiveness of artificial inflation of link popularity via article distribution. (if performed en-mass, this
is manipulation of the SERP's)
3) Automated article generation software
The only way to keep your visitor on your site and coming back is to provide stellar content. Webmasters must become dedicated to
their visitors by providing them with current and accurate information as well as unique ideas that are thought provoking.

I agree with the posters above. This borders too closely on plagiarism -- and no where did I see anyone say you need to make sure you change the sentences you retrieve. Joel, as a reputable publisher, I believe it is your responsibility to help educate people on how they can't just steal stuff from other sites--especially the newbies who don't know any better and are looking to you for guidance!

"Plagiarism is the use of another persons work (this could be his or her words, products or ideas) for personal advantage, without proper acknowledgement of the original work. Most often the phrase is used to denote deliberate intent of passing it off as one's own work. Plagiarism may occur deliberately (with the intention to deceive) or accidentally (due to poor referencing). It encompasses copying material from a book, copying and pasting information from the World Wide Web, receiving help from unauthorized sources on coursework, and copying answers from a fellow student during an examination (presuming the copied work isnt attributed). Plagiarism and cheating are not the same; cheating takes many forms, including but not limited to deliberate plagiarism.
Plagiarism is neither a criminal nor civil offense. In fact, plagiarism is not a legal term and is not legally recognised. However, breach of copyright or intellectual property rights (IPR) is illegal; acts of plagiarism that breach either of the former are illegal acts. Not every act of plagiarism is a breach of copyright. For example, one can plagiarise work that has no copyright (such as material that is out of copyright)."

I've been discussing this software at my blog recently. Personally, I am ethically uncomfortable with it. However, based on my understanding of current copyright law I believe most users escape any potential infringement liability. What gets me is the amount of user intervention required to create a readable article with the program. Any webmaster who values his time would be better off hiring a writer to produce truly original articles.

I had a look at this tool and it seemed a piece of junk. Maybe it needs better calibrating, but the articles I ended up with were just trash.
