Yesterday, I received a press release announcing a new book that my readers might find of interest. The book is called "Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed" by Katharine DeBrecht.
Being a solid conservative, I got a laugh out of the title and had to read on to find out what the book is all about. Since I haven't read the book myself yet (but have ordered it), I will just post this from the Amazon.com site.
This full-color illustrated book is a fun way for parents to teach young children the valuable lessons of conservatism. Written in simple text, readers can follow along with Tommy and Lou as they open a lemonade stand to earn money for a swing set. But when liberals start demanding that Tommy and Lou pay half their money in taxes, take down their picture of Jesus, and serve broccoli with every glass of lemonade, the young brothers experience the downside to living in Liberaland.Would you let your child read blatantly liberal stories with titles such as "King & King," "No, George, No," or "It's Just a Plant"?
Unless you live in Haight-Ashbury or write for the New York Times, probably not. But with the nation’s libraries and classrooms filled with overtly liberal children’s books advocating everything from gay marriage to marijuana use, kids everywhere are being deluged with left-wing propaganda."Help! Mom! There Are Liberals Under My Bed" is the book conservative parents have been seeking. This illustrated book — the first in the "Help! Mom!" series from Kids Ahead — is perfect for parents who seek to share their traditional values with their children, as well as adults who wish to give a humorous gift to a friend.
I was listening to Limbaugh today, and he talked about the book on his show. At Amazon.com today, the book is the #6 seller! Now THAT is clout.
Anyway, the book appears to be a great way to teach the truth of liberalism to children without being too heavy. It appears to have many liberals knotted up as it seems to hit the nail right on the head. I'm looking forward to receiving my copy!

Can't we just let the kids be kids?
September 23, 2005 12:53 AM
Sure, we can! But part of being a kid means learning how to become a responsible, thinking and productive member of society. Education is the way that this is brought about. What better way to educate than to do it in a humorous and entertaining way?

I feel sorry for your kids.
September 26, 2005 11:14 PM
Why, Mary? Because they are loved enough by their parents to be told the truth? Because they are well-adjusted and are learning to think for themselves? Because they are being taught that compassion begins with giving people a hand up and not a hand out? Because when we watch the news or read the paper, we teach them how to think critically about what is being "reported" so they can read between the lines and development discernment? I'm not sure what you are sorry about, but I assure you that your pity is sorely misguided and unnecessary :-)

Joel, I think what Mary may have meant is that kids should be allowed to be kids and not have the biases and propaganda of adults disguised to them in the form of children's literature. Is it good that your kids are taught to think critically? Of course. But thinkingcritically means to look at ALL sides of an issue. This book, is, again, just another attempt bythe right to ridicule people who may think differently than they do. It is humorous, but just simply PARTISAN propaganda. I think itis wonderful that your kids think critically and clearly, but allow them to see all sides of an issue and stop cramming party politics down their throats. Just because you don't like liberals does not mean that ALL liberal ideas need to be ridiculed. I don't particularly like all liberals, and think a lot of them are wack jobs, but I also think critically enough to see that Conservatives do the EXACT same thing. Far right wack jobs and evangelists like Jerry Falwell are JUST as nuts as the radical liberals. Hopefully you teach your children that side of the story as well. Again, this country would be a MUCH better place if politics and pushing one's own agenda were not a part of the system. Politics just breeds hatred and intolerance of others. Perhaps kids should be learning more about that truth of life...

I have to second what Robert has said.
Extremism is just another word for exclusionism. Religion and politics have no place in public schools. Religion is based on faith not fact. Faith and spiritualism is personal and something that children can be exposed to at home and in places of worship. Public education must remain based on fact not faith.
I agree with some conservative ideals just as I agree with some liberal ones. What happened to thinking for one's own self? What happened to picking and choosing based on common sense and truth rather than which political or religious party is presenting it?
Our children have enough to worry about and if parents spent less time trying to protect them from the facts and more time guiding them in their journey through this complex world with open hearts and minds rather than bias, judgment and forcing them to choose sides, we might be on a road to peace rather than war.

Banks teach tellers how to discern counterfeit money by letting them handle the real thing all day. I will let me children handle the real thing so they will not be deceived by falsehoods. Any parent that does not raise children with conviction and morality is irresponsible.
And I do teach my children about those who are wacky on the religious side as examples of fake christianity. Again, it is important that they know true doctrine and not that which has been twisted by someone who calls themselves a Christian.

And Amyla, I'm sorry but you are wrong. The first public educational institutions in our country were all seminaries. Quote after quote from our Founding Fathers indicates that not only should religion be taught in public schools, but that the Bible should be the PRIMARY textbook.
Just wanted to help you your facts straight so you wouldn't come to conclusions based only on your opinion.

Quote after quote from our Founding Fathers indicates that not only should religion be taught in public schools, but that the Bible should be the PRIMARY textbook.
Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.
-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782
Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because if there be one he must approve of the homage of reason more than that of blindfolded fear.
-Thomas Jefferson, Letter to Peter Carr, August 10, 1787
Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Dr. Thomas Cooper, February 10, 1814
Accustom a people to believe that priests and clergy can forgive sins ... and you will have sins in abundance. I would not dare to dishonor my Creator's name by [attaching] it to this filthy book [the Bible].
-Thomas Paine
I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish Church, by the Roman Church, by the Greek Church, by the Turkish Church, by the Protestant Church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church.
-Thomas Paine
Let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religions.
-George Washington
Religious controversies are always productive of more acrimony and irreconcilable hatreds than those which spring from any other cause.
-George Washington, letter to Sir Edward Newenham, June 22, 1792
Joel, I think you should get your facts straight, before you pass your opinions down to your children. Let them think for themselves. Knowledge is power. Information is power. Opinions are like assholes... everybody has one.

Bryan,
There are INFINITELY more quotes from our Founding Fathers indicating that the majority believed the exact opposite of what you have posted. Picking and choosing may be convenient, but it doesn't tell the whole story. I do give my children information knowledge and information. I'm sure they'll do just fine. :-)
