Day 1: An Early Start

Posted on October 6, 2003 09:39 AM by Joel Comm

Around 3 pm Sunday afternoon, Mary came into the office and said something like, "If we would have thought of it, we could have just left today." I stared at her for about one second and spoke, "Well, why don't we?" I don't think she realize what she got herself into!

We furiously gathered everything together and packed up the van. Just when I thought it was full, Mary pointed out another item that needed to be stowed away. Remarkably, everything fits. It's tight, but it fits.

We decided to take a chunk out of the initial leg to St. Louis and made it as far as Springfield, Missourri. It was around 11:30 when we pulled in to the Red Roof Inn to settle for the night.

vinita1-s.jpgOn the way, we make the obligatory rest stops, including the world's largest McDonalds, which is Jenna's favorite part of the trip thus far. Pictured is the original Glass House restaurant, located in Vinita, Oklahoma. It is located above I-44 and is now a McDonalds. Of course, the arches are now golden. Jenna said, "Wow, Dad. They have stores in there!"

Fascinating stuff? Read more about it here.

The kids are busy working on their schoolwork this morning, and we'll be leaving shortly. I have slapped my WorldVillage.com magnets on the car, so if someone happens to spot us on the road, be sure to leave a comment here. We'll make a quick stop at Wal*Mart to pick up some things we need and then we'll head for St. Louis. Later today, you should be able to find us at thet of the world-famous St. Louis Arch!
