Consumer Electronics Show 2006

It's been at least seven years since I have attended the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Since I was coming into town for the Affiliate Summit, I thought I'd come to town a day early and enjoy free entry as a member of the press. It took little arm-twisting to convince my good friend, Dave Taylor, to join me on this excursion.

The CES is the grand-daddy of electronics trade shows. Over 150,000 people are in town to see the latest gizmos, gadgets and big toys for big boys (and girls!)

The show fills every hall in the Las Vegas Convention Center, the Hilton Convention Center AND the Sands Conventiion Center. It is absolutely enormous and there is hardly a way to see it all.

Highlights from the show included:

The 103" plasma flat-screen tv from Samsung. This thing was beautiful. Not only was it gigantic, but the picture was absolutely gorgeous.

  • The Game-Runner. This device is a manually operated treadmill complete with integrated game controls. Hooked up to a computer playing the first-person shooter, Far Cry, you find yourself running through the jungle blasting at baddies. Not only fun, but a great workout.
  • Cool robotics. It is fun to see the advances in robotic technology. The lifelike movement of the latest creations are a site to behold.
  • Zero-gravity massage chairs. I love my Sharper Image iJoy2 massage chair. But I spent a few minutes in a zero-gravity massage chair and found out that I had muscles I didn't know existed! It was just a slice of heaven.
  • Everything else! From the latest wifi technology to cell phones that do everything but blow your nose, we are getting closer and closer to the technology age that we have so often seen portrayed in sci-fi movies. Hopefully we can retain our humanity along the way.
