Bulbous Bouffant

Galoshes. Mukluks. Gazeebo. Macadamia. Blubber. Baluga.

When you read those words, you either know what I am talking about and are busting out laughing, or you think I am totally insane and should be committed (well, you may be right on both counts).

When I was growing up, one of my favorite radio shows was Dr. Demento. I remember listening to Allan Sherman, Barnes and Barnes and a very young Weird Al Yankovic, as the good doctor would spin weird and wacky tracks for two hours every week. Let's face it. Dead puppies aren't much fun.

The years have gone by and I have taken up an interest in Demento-worthy skits and songs once again. I recently ran across one by a group called The Vestibules. As it turns out, this particular sketch is one of the most requested tracks that Dr. Demento receives, even to this day.

The skit is called Bulbous Bouffant and there is no point in attempting to describe it. The first time I heard it I busted a gut. Then I played it for my wife and kids. The word "macadamia" has now entered our language just because it is fun to say.

My best recommendation is to take four minutes out of your wife and Listen to Bulbous Bouffant. If it is true that laughter is the best medicine, get ready for a large dose of pharmaceuticals.

I think it is true greatness. My six year old son and I bust out on the skit in public (waiting in line at the store, etc.) and we get some very strange looks. He and I enjoy it, which is all that matters. :-)
